Charles Darwin
Charles Robert Darwin (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist. He
established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors
and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from
a process that he called natural selection
Charles Darwin surely recognized his book would bring about a confrontation with the
church and why he tip-toed through The Origin of Species without mentioning how his
theory of evolution applied to man. Only at the very end of this book did he state
anything about humans at all which simply said “light would be thrown of the origins of
man and his history”. Darwin cleverly omitted humans but it was clear to everyone his
theory must surely also apply to man. The firestorm of controversy thus began…
attracting strong opposition from the clergy and even those religious-minded.
Jessie J
Jessica Ellen Cornish (born 27 March 1988), better known by her stage name Jessie J, is
an English singer and songwriter. Born and raised in London, she studied at the BRIT
School before signing with Gut Records and striking a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV
Music Publishing where she wrote for artists such as Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus.
The singer/songwriter recently said she loves being a role model and wants to set a
good example to her younger fans.
"It's important for me to embrace being a role
model and that young people have someone to look up to who does that," she told Top
of the Pops magazine.
The songstress added that self-belief is important, as this will
encourage the same attitude among others
George Orwell
Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950) known by his pen name George
Orwell, was an English novelist and journalist. Considered perhaps the 20th century's
best chronicler of English culture, Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction and
polemical journalism.
An anarchist in the late 1920s, by the 1930s he had begun to consider himself a
socialist. In 1937, he was commissioned to write an account of poverty among
unemployed miners in northern England, which resulted in 'The Road to Wigan Pier'.
Orwell travelled to Spain to fight for the Republicans against Franco's Nationalists. In
1945, Orwell's 'Animal Farm' was published. A political fable set in a farmyard but
based on Stalin's betrayal of the Russian Revolution. 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' was
published four years later. Set in an imaginary totalitarian future, the book made a deep
impression, with its title and many phrases - such as 'Big Brother’ and ‘Room 101’.
