Electrical Terminology
• Amp (or Ampere): The standard measure of electrical current.
o Electricity flows through a wire much like a water flowing through an open pipe.
The flow of electricity (electric current) is measured in amps.
o The Amp draw of a circuit is dependent on the needs of the devices plugged into it,
and is limited by the branch circuit protection.
• Voltage: The standard measure of electrical potential, and is a fixed value for every
circuit. Voltage is measured with respect to a reference point (usually between two
conductors of the circuit).
o Voltage is analogous to pressure in a water closed pipe. Higher pressures, or
higher voltages, allow more energy to flow within a given amount of time.
o Standard voltages present in most data centers are 120V and 208V in the USA,
and 230V in continental Europe.

Electrical Terminology
• Volt-Amp:
The amount of apparent power in an electrical circuit.
o VA is calculated as: Volt-Amps = volts x amps (VA = V x A)
• Watt:
The measure of the work being performed -or- total power consumed by a system.
o Watts are calculated as: Watts = volts x amps x power factor
Single Phase (W = V x A x PF)
3 Phase (W = V x A x PF x 1.73)
• Power Factor:
The ratio of Real Power to Apparent Power.
o A power factor of 100% represents perfect efficiency.
o Lower values indicate that there is energy loss in the circuit.
AMPS …
WATTS …
the rate of flow of electricity.
the power that is used
VOLTS …
the push (or pressure), not the amount
POWER FACTOR… the efficiency

What is De-rating?
• Continuous Load = 80% Plug Rating Rule
The National Electric Code (NEC) requires that the continuous load not exceed 80% of
the plug rating.
o 15A unit may supply 12A of power
o 20A unit may supply 16A of power
o 30A unit may supply 24A of power
o 60A unit may supply 48A of power
• How is Redundancy affected
In a traditional 2 feed system where ‘A’ and ‘B’ are independent of each other the system
needs account for the potential load if one feed fails.
Example: Two 20A PDUs (A & B redundant) are each loaded to 40%, feed ‘A’ fails so the
entire load in now transferred to ‘B’, or 80% (16A).

Single Phase Power
• Single-phase power is like a 1-cylinder
diesel engine.
• Power is produced once each cycle.
• North American power is 60Hz, which is
60 cycles per second.
Single Phase

3-Phase Power
• A 3-cylinder diesel engine has one
cylinder firing with each 120 degree
rotation of the crankshaft…so that 3
power pulses are generated for each
full cycle.
• Like the 3-cylinder diesel engine, a 3phase power feed has 3 power lines
that are offset from each other by 120
degrees.
Three Phases

3-Phase 4 Wire DELTA Configuration
• In a delta configuration there is only one output voltage level available as there is no
neutral conductor present.
• A 3-phase delta power configuration consists of 4 conductors:
o 3 “hot” lines
o 1 ground line
3-Phase 208V Delta
208V output is achieved by wiring
one “hot” line to another “hot” line

3-Phase 5 Wire WYE Configuration
• The neutral line in the circuit is what makes the 3-phase WYE configuration flexible and
increasingly popular, as it allows the output of both 120V and 208V from the same PDU
without using a transformer or multiple whips.
• A 3-phase WYE power configuration consists of 5 conductors:
o 3 “hot” lines
o 1 ground line
o 1 neutral line
3-Phase 120V/208V WYE

“neutral.” (brown arrows)

Plugs and Receptacles
• IEC - Popular Globally and on equipment
o IEC plugs can output either 125 volts or 250 volts.
o The most popular IEC configurations are C13 to C14 (similar to what you see on
the back of your computer at home) and C19 to C20.
• NEMA - The most popular standard for plugs and receptacles.
o Locking configurations, the part begins with an ‘L’.
o The next number represents voltage (5 for 125 volt, 6 for 250 volt).
o The amperage rating of the plug or receptacle is listed after the dash.
o The final character in the part number is a P (for plug) or R (for receptacle).
• Examples
o L5-20P = 20 Amp, 125 volt twist-lock plug
o 5-20P = 20 Amp,125 volt straight-blade plug.
o L6-30P = plug inserts into an L6-30R receptacle.
