Cancer - is it merely a nutrient deficiency disease?
Cancer is the word used to describe the growth of excessive immature cells in the
body, which form a lump or mass that can invade other tissue, and spread to
other areas. There are several theories about causes of cancer, some causes and
risk factors are known – such as UV rays inducing melanoma. Some scientists
implicate ‘viruses’, but is it the virus or unresolved chronic inflammation (maybe
caused by an infective organism) to blame, after all UV rays cause chronic
inflammation too, bone cancers can occur at inflamed injury sites, and tar from
cigarettes inflames the lungs.
In 1931 the Nobel Prize was awarded to Otto Warburg, a scientist who showed
cancer occurred in tissue which had chronically low nutrient combustion. It is
current science that cancer cells live without oxygen. There have been arguments
about this however a check of blood oxygen saturation (by pulse oximetry) will
indicate when risks of incomplete nutrient oxidation exist. Research from the
University of Adelaide in 2003 confirmed Warburg’s work, showing that low
oxygen saturation (anaerobia) stimulates tumour growth. So aerobic activity is
definitely beneficial. Even if low oxygen saturation is not a direct cause of cancer,
low oxygenation has been proven to be implicated in many chronic ill-health
conditions.
All the nutrients (and toxins) in what we eat and drink are transported to the
body’s cells. In the cells these substances are combusted, and heat and energy is
released, similar to putting wood in a fire. If there is insufficient oxygen available
the wood doesn’t burn but smoulders, cooling the fire and leaving black sooty
residues. So it is in the cells. With good oxygen flow the wood (or nutrient) burns
hotter and cleaner. Unburnt residues become irritant (inflammatory) or toxic to
the cells, which can lead to the cells dying or performing incompletely.
Wholesome nutrients, antioxidant, Vitamins A, C and E and the mineral selenium
help clean these cells and remove the ‘sooty debris’.
In 1953 a father and son team in the USA discovered proanthocyanides (PAC’s),
also known as Vitamin B17 or laetrile. PAC’s were shown to be converted in
malignant cells and kill the cancerous cells. Krebs and their colleagues came
under vicious attack from the American Medical Association and pharmaceutical
companies, presumably because as a vitamin derived from apricot kernels, B17
(Laetrile) could not be patented in order to yield huge profits for shareholders.
Foods rich in PAC’s include the kernels of apricots, apple and watermelon pips,
molasses, black cherries, flaxseed oil, red grapes and beetroot, among others.
Laetrile injections are used overseas as part of cancer treatments. So, if ‘an apple
a day keeps the doctor away’ maybe the best part of the apple is in the core, the
bit most people don’t eat.
Australian newspapers recently reported that medical researchers in London have
discovered ‘a natural cyanide-producing system created by plants’, to locate and
kill cancerous tumours in humans. Though London researchers cite Cassava as
the source plant for the active tumour-killing cyanide, the PAC Cassava contains
is exactly the same as that found in apricot kernels, source of the locally outlawed
Vitamin B17, or Laetrile. The vitamin is harmless to healthy tissue because each
molecule of B17 contains one unit each of organic cyanide and benzaldehyde and

two of glucose, tightly locked together. In order for the cyanide to become active
it is first necessary to unlock the molecule by an enzyme called beta-glucosidase,
which is present all over the human body in minute quantities, but up to 100
times higher at the site of a malignant cancer tumour. When broken down the
organic cyanide attacks the malignant cell!
Why have we become increasingly vulnerable to every form of cancer as each
year goes by? Is there a link between the steadily increasing quantities of
chemicals and additives in our food and water supplies, or has the removal of
nutrient factors from our refined western diets been more to blame?
Though many treatments for cancer have demonstrated varying success over the
years, there has been too little discussion on possible ways of preventing cancer,
or controlling it effectively after it strikes. Surgery, radiotherapy and
chemotherapy may not be the only options, nutritional support might be
beneficial.
In the same way that Vitamin C cured the scourge of scurvy, Vitamin D helps
bone health, and Vitamin A prevents blindness, is it too much to expect that other
simple nutrients could prevent or cure cancer ?
