Spelling Assignment Choices
1. Write your words twice in ABC order. One
should be in cursive, the other in manuscript.
2. Spell your words into a tape recorder. (Don’t
look at the word as you spell!) Listen to the tape.
Did you get them all correct? This requires a
note with Parent Signature for credit.
3. At home, write your words in sand, sugar,
shaving cream, pudding, corn meal, etc. This
requires a note with Parent Signature for credit.
4. Write each word two times in your best
cursive.
5. Code Breaker. Write your words in a number
code (1=A, 2+B, 3=C, etc.) Write the word in one
column and put the coded word (numbers) next to
it. Be sure to put commas between numbers.
6. **Word Scramble: Fold your paper in half
(hot-dog style). On one side neatly print your
words. On the other side, scramble your words.
7. Type your words two times on the computer.
Number the words. Run a “spell check”. Print.
8. **Make a word search using all of your
words. Use graph paper. The puzzle must be
15x10 sized. Also, write the words on the page so
that a friend can check them off as he/she finds
your words.
9. Shape boxes: Fold a piece of graph paper in
half (hot-dog style). On the left side make shape
boxes. Tall letters have tall boxes. Letters that go
below the baseline have boxes that go below the
line. On the right side, write your words.
10. Scrabble: Using graph paper, write all of your
words so that they connect. Words must run from
left to right or from top to bottom. There can be no
nonsense words formed by adjoining letters.
11. Write the definition of each word.
12. Write each word in meaningful sentence.
You must write in cursive. Highlight your spelling
words. Your sentence must show that you know
the meaning of each word.
13. Look up each word in the dictionary. Divide
each word into syllables and write the guide
words. Example: mos qui to  Morn and
Mother
14. Use letters from a magazine or newspaper to
spell your words. Neatly glue them to a piece of
paper.
15. Write tongue twisters using all of your words.
Highlight the spelling word.
Example: FRIGHTENSFred frightens fourteen
fearful ferrets.
16. Write a story using all of your words.
Highlight your words. Your story must be at least
one page long, and it must make sense!
Remember, stories have a setting, characters,
problem, and a solution.
17. **Use graph paper to make a crossword
puzzle. Use all of your words. Your clues must be
in sentence form. Make sure they are good clues!
18. Make spelling triangles. Use graph paper.
Be sure to use all of your words.
19.
Rainbow Words: Use four different
colored pencils or pens. Alternate colors for each
letter of your spelling word. Print. Be neat.
20. Play a game on the internet using your words.

you use the internet, then you should print the puzzle on your
home printer and then solve it.
