Bangor University Research Excellence Awards 2016
These inaugural awards will be a fantastic opportunity to highlight and celebrate research excellence at
Bangor University.
Building on the success of our Impact and Innovation Awards the inaugural competition will have the
chance to shine a spotlight on research excellence at Bangor University by:



recognising and valuing our success
showcasing examples of research excellence internally and externally
highlighting the achievements and talents of individuals and teams
Going forward it is our intention to hold annual Research Excellence Awards and Impact & Innovation
Awards on an alternate basis.
The competition will culminate in a black tie awards dinner in Pontio for those who have been shortlisted
on the evening of the 5th December 2016.
Each winner will receive £200 in cash, and a prize memento.
The award categories are:
Rising star: a talented early career researcher (with under 7 years experience since completing their
doctoral studies) who is showing promise as a future research leader. We expect that individuals in this
category will be nominated (rather than self- nominated) for an award.
Science: a project or programme of work that has/is being led by an individual or team from Bangor
University, which would be viewed by peers as excellent in terms of the significance of the topic/question,
the rigour and innovativeness of the approach, and the generation of new insights. Submissions that are
interdisciplinary and demonstrate engagement will be particularly welcome. This award is open to selfnomination or nomination by another party.
Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences: a project or programme of work that has/is being led by an
individual or team from Bangor University, which would be viewed by peers as excellent in terms of the
significance of the topic/question, the rigour and innovativeness of the approach, and the generation of
new insights. Submissions that are interdisciplinary and demonstrate engagement will be particularly
welcome. This award is open to self-nomination or nomination by another party.
Doctoral Project: to recognise and celebrate current and recent doctoral candidates (within one year of
defending their thesis) by recognising a project that shows a clear and outstanding contribution to the
development of knowledge, and/or theory, and/or methods. This award is open to self-nomination or
nomination by another party.
International: a project or programme of work that has/is being led by Bangor University in collaboration
with international partners, which is/has generated evidence of international quality and relevance
within more than one country. This award is open to self-nomination or nomination by another party.
Lifetime achievement: an opportunity to honour the achievements of a Bangor University academic who
has made a significant contribution to their respective field of research over a prolonged period of time,
including building up capability and capacity within their field and within Bangor University, and someone
1
who would be judged to be an internationally recognised research leader. We expect that individuals in
this category will be nominated (rather than self- nominated) for this award.
All research active staff at Bangor University are eligible to apply or be nominated.

Close of competition: 30 September 2016
