System
2.1.1 Power drive system (PDS) (see figure 1)
System consisting of power equipment (composed
of converter section, d.c. motor and other
equipment such as, but not limited to, the
feeding section or the field supply), and control
equipment (composed of switching control
- on/off for example - speed control, current
control, firing system, field control,
protection, status monitoring, communication,
tests, diagnostics, process interface/port, etc.)

2.1.1 A.C. power drive system (PDS)
(see figure 1) System consisting of power
equipment (composed of converter section,
a.c. motor and other equipment such as, but
not limited to the feeding section), and control
equipment (composed of switching control
– on/off for example –, voltage, frequency, or
current control, firing system, protection, status
monitoring, communication, tests, diagnostics,
process interface/port, etc.).
IEC 61800-3
• 3.1 Overview
• For the purposes of this document, definitions
related to EMC and to relevant phenomena to
• be found in IEC 60050(161), in CISPR, and also,
the following additional definitions apply.
• A power drive system (PDS) consists of a
motor and a complete drive module (CDM). ...
... IEC 61800-3
• It does not include the equipment driven by the
motor. The CDM consists of a basic drive module
• (BDM) and its possible extensions such as the
feeding section or some auxiliaries (e.g.
• ventilation). The BDM contains converter, control
and self-protection functions. Figure 1
• shows the boundary between the PDS and the rest of
the installation and/or manufacturing
• process. IEC 61800-1, IEC 61800-2 and IEC 61800-4
give details for these definitions.
IEC 61800-4
• 3.1.1 A.C. power drive system (PDS) with
voltage above
• 1 kV (see figure 1)
• System consisting of:
• power equipment (possible harmonic filters,
• input transformer, converter section,
• possible output transformer, a.c. motor);
• control, protection and auxiliaries.
IEC 61800-5-1
• 3.20
• power drive system PDS
• system for the speed control of an electric
motor, including the CDM and motor but not
the driven equipment (see Figure 1)
IEC 61800-5-2

• PDS(SR)
• adjustable speed electrical power drive system
suitable for use in safety-related applications
IEC TR 61800-6
• 2.1 Terms and definitions
• For the purpose of this technical report the
definitions given in IEC 61800-1, IEC 61800-2
• and IEC 60146-1-1 as well as the following,
apply.
IEC TR 61800-8
• 3.1 Overview of the system
• A power drive system (PDS) consists of a motor and a
complete drive module (CDM). It does
• not include the equipment driven by the motor. The
CDM consists of a basic drive module
• (BDM) and its possible extensions such as the
feeding section or some auxiliaries (e.g.
• ventilation). ......
IEC TS 61800-8
• The BDM contains converter, control and selfprotection functions. Figure 1
• shows the boundary between the PDS and the rest
of the installation and/or manufacturing
• process. If the PDS has its own dedicated
transformer, this transformer is included as a part
• of the CDM.
