Year 5 Parents Information Evening Tuesday 1st November The Year 5 Team • Year 5 teachers • Miss Simonds/Mrs Kingsford-Bere, Miss Southgate • TA Support • Miss Williams and Mrs Buckle Year 5 Curriculum and extra curricular activities • Continue to follow the National Curriculum (September 2014) • Written as 3 termly topics – ‘Bury St Edmunds and Beyond’; ‘Earth and Space’ and ‘Ancient Egypt Autumn Term • Topic - Bury St Edmunds and Beyond • Geography based - Comparison study between Bury St Eds, a European country (France-Paris) and an American Country (Brazil – Rio de Janeiro) – similarities and differences in physical and human geography. Map work skills (including digital images and OS map work symbols). 3 cathedral locations. • History – the Story of St Edmund Autumn Term - cont • • • • • Sci – properties of materials, changes of materials, separating mixtures, reversible/irreversible changes DT – strengthen, stiffen and reinforce structures (link to architecture of buildings in the 3 places being studied e.g. Eiffel Tower) Art – textiles/sewing/collage work (link to stained glass windows) Music – violin/brass instrument lessons from County Music Service Computing – search engines (link to topic research), Autumn Term • PE – football, gymnastics • French – revision of greetings, classroom instructions, classroom objects/colour revision, days of the week Christmas • RE – Christianity (Gospel/testament), Islam (revelation) • PSHE – Rights of Passage – what have I achieved? Rest of the Year • Spring Term • Summer Term Science focus – ‘Space’ History focus ‘Ancient Egyptians’ See school website for more information PE • Twice a week – Monday and Tuesday for both classes New Curriculum • Much more challenging • Focus is much more on SPaG • Maths – broken down into Arithmetic, Problem Solving and Reasoning • Comprehension skills and a good level of reading is essential • Expectations are much higher SATS • Next Year your child will be sitting their Statutory Assessment Tests (SATS) • Yr6 may seem along way off – but the children will be assessed based on the Yr5/6 Curriculum – so we are already working towards this Assessment • Pupils are judged in Reading, Writing and Maths • Pupils are graded as follows: – Below Expected Level – At Expected Level – Exceeding Expected Level 2016 Results • Last year only 53% of pupils nationally made the expected progress in Reading, Writing and Maths How can we help our child? • Start good habits now • Encourage your child with Reading – sign their bookmark daily • Encourage good attendance • Support with Spelling and Times tables learning • Be aware of what we are covering in school and try to support/enrich at home How to Help Your Child with Reading click to see all text • Listening to your child read can take many forms. • First and foremost, focus developing an enjoyment and love of reading. • Enjoy stories together – reading stories to your child at KS1 and KS2 is equally as important as listening to your child read. • Read a little at a time but often, rather than rarely but for long periods of time! • Talk about the story before, during and afterwards – discuss the plot, the characters, their feelings and actions, how it makes you feel, predict what will happen and encourage your child to have their own opinions. • Look up definitions of words together – you could use a dictionary, the internet or an app on a phone or tablet. • All reading is valuable – it doesn’t have to be just stories. Reading can involve anything from fiction and non-fiction, poetry, newspapers, magazines, football programmes, TV guides. • Visit the local library - it’s free! chapter menu next page How to Help Your Child with Writing click to see all text • Practise and learn weekly spelling lists – make it fun! • Encourage opportunities for writing such as letters to family or friends, shopping lists, notes or reminders, stories or poems. • Write together – be a good role model for writing. • Encourage use of a dictionary to check spelling and a thesaurus to find synonyms and expand vocabulary • Allow your child to use a computer for word processing, which will allow for editing and correcting of errors without lots of crossing out. • Remember that good readers become good writers!
