The Growth of a Nation
People of Mesopotamia
The Sumerians created the earliest civilization
in Mesopotamia around 3000 b.c.e.
Large city-states developed near the
Euphrates River.Although most
Sumerians made their living
farming, other professionals
such as doctors also were present.
Geography
Mesopotamia-from the Ancient Greek word
Meonotapia meaning “land between two
rivers”.
The land is between the Tigis and Euphrates
rivers. The area today is Iraq, Kuwait, and
small parts of Syria Turkey and Iran.
Innovations
● Mesopotamians made strong tools out metal
such as bronze. Historians refer to this
time in history as the bronze age.
● Cuneiform was invented in Mesopotamia.
Cuneiform which means a wedge shaped
stylus used to make impressions on wet
clay.
Mesopotamian Government
The Mesopotamians believed
their kings and queens were
descended from the City of
Gods. But, unlike the ancient
Egyptians they never believed
their kings and queens were real
Gods.
Religion and philosophy
Mesopotamians were polytheistic.
Mesopotamian religion was the first be to be
recorded.
They believed the world was a flat
disc with heaven above.
Economy and Agriculture
● Irrigated agriculture spread in
Mesopotamia.
● Sumerian Temples functioned as banks and
developed the first large-scale systems of
loans and credit.
