BASIC COMPETENCIES 1 THE EARTH, A CHANGING PLANET CONTRIBUTION OF UNIT 1 TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF BASIC COMPETENCIES Interaction with the physical world Social and civic competence – Students will develop these competencies through the contents in this unit. – Analyse the impact of human activity on the environment. Information and technology – Study and analyse images. management – Analyse and interpret a seismograph report. – Define the main characteristics of the Milky Way, the Solar System and the Earth, using the correct vocabulary. Communication skills – Describe the internal and external geological forces that affect the Earth, using specialised vocabulary. – Identify and describe the different types of rocks in the geosphere. – Answer questions about the contents using previous knowledge or the book. Learning to learn – Use a conceptual map as a study tool. – Complete a summary of the unit’s contents. Cultural and artistic competency Autonomy and individual initiative – Identify the materials that everyday objects are made from. – Reflect on the contents of the unit individually. – Recognise a light year as a measurement of time. Math skills – Know and compare the sizes and distances between different celestial bodies. UNIT 1 INTERACTION WITH THE PHYSICAL WORLD COMPETENCIES Student book Activity book Didactic Guide unit 1 Explain the characteristics of the Unit 1 Milky Way and Solar System Unit 1 Unit 1 Recognise the different parts of the Earth Unit 1 Unit 1 Unit 1 Describe the geosphere and the Earth’s tectonic plates Unit 1 Unit 1 Unit 1 Analyse the internal geological forces of the Earth Unit 1 Unit 1 Unit 1 Describe the external geological forces of the Earth Unit 1 Unit 1 Unit 1 Describe the main types of rocks Unit 1 and how they were formed Unit 1 Unit 1 1-2 CURRICULUM THE EARTH, A CHANGING PLANET – Describe the basic characteristics of the Milky Way. DIDACTIC OBJECTIVES – Locate the main planets of the Solar System in a drawing, identifying their size and distance from the Sun. – Identify and distinguish between the three parts of the Earth. – Describe the layers that make up the geosphere. – Understand the tectonic plates that make up the outer surface of the Earth. – Use pictures to describe the two main types of violent internal geological forces: earthquakes and volcanoes. – Identify external geological forces that change the Earth’s surface. – Use pictures to learn the stages of external geological forces: weathering, erosion, transportation and sedimentation. – Recognise the difference between rocks and minerals. – Describe and distinguish between the different types of rocks. – The Milky Way and the Solar System. CONTENTS – Planets in the Solar System: size and distance from the Sun. – The geosphere and the Earth’s tectonic plates. – Explain the different parts of the Earth. – Internal geological forces: volcanoes and earthquakes. – Analysis and interpretation of a seismograph report. – Study a map of the main areas of seismic risk in Spain. – Changes in the Earth’s surface and external geological forces. – Describe the process of sedimentation. – Use photos and graphs to analyse the effects of external geological forces on the Earth’s surface, especially on rocks. – Rocks and minerals in the Earth’s crust. – Identify rocks and minerals and distinguish between them. – Classify different types of rocks. EVALUATION CRITERIA – Check that the students can describe the Milky Way and the Solar System, and identify the main celestial bodies in each. – Confirm that they can describe and distinguish between the different parts of the Earth. – Evaluate if they can distinguish between the three layers of the geosphere and describe the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust. – Verify that they know how to describe volcanoes and earthquakes and recognise them as internal geological forces. – Confirm that they recognise external geological forces that cause changes in the Earth’s surface. – Evaluate if they know how to explain the processes of weathering, erosion, transportation and sedimentation. – Check if they can distinguish between the three types of rocks and explain what a mineral is.
