Parts of Speech notes
Nouns- A word that names a person, place, or
thing.
A proper noun names a particular person, place or
thing and must begin with a capital letter.
Verbs- A word that shows action or being.
A verb can take a form of “be” or tell us who’s got
what!
Adverbs- A word that describes when, how,
where, how often, and how much.
Adverbs frequently end in “ly” and modify verbs,
adjectives, and other adverbs.
Pronouns- A word that takes the place of a noun.
Pronouns can be personal, possessive,
demonstrative, indefinite, and interrogative.
Adjectives- A word that describes a thing, idea,
or living being.
Adjectives help tell us more. Adjectives modify
nouns.
Prepositions- A word that connects a noun or
pronoun to other words in a sentence.
A preposition shows us where, tells us time or
place, and gives us direction.
Conjunctions- A word that joins together
sentences, phrases, or words.
Examples of conjunctions are: and, yet, for, or,
so, since.
Interjections- A word or phrase spoken suddenly
and used to show emotion.
Examples of interjections are: look, alas, yikes,
wow, Hey….you, and indeed
