Lesson Title: Solar System Power Point Grade level: Third Subject: Earth Science Time needed: Students work independently on project. I assign a deadline of one week. Lesson Description: This lesson accompanies the third grade Scott Foresman, California Science textbook and my website. However; it could be modified to match any solar system unit. After completing Chapter 6 in the student textbook and workbook, the student will be able to create a power point slide show on our solar system. California State Standards, Science, Third Grade 3ES4.0 Earth Sciences Objects in the sky move in regular and predictable patterns. 3ES4.b Students know the way in which the Moon's appearance changes during the four-week lunar cycle. 3ES4.d Earth Sciences Students know that Earth is one of several planets that orbit the Sun and that the Moon orbits Earth. 3ES4.e Students know the position of the Sun in the sky changes during the course of the day and from season to season. 3RC2.7 Reading Comprehension Students follow simple multiple-step written instructions (e.g., how to assemble a product or play a board game). 3RW1.0 Word Analysis, Fluency, and Systematic Vocabulary Development Students understand the basic features of reading. They select letter patterns and know how to translate them into spoken language by using phonics, syllabication, and word parts. They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading. 3NS2.0 Number Sense Students calculate and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. 3MR2.3 Mathematical Reasoning Students use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, and models to explain mathematical reasoning. 3MR1.1 Mathematical Reasoning Analyze problems by identifying relationships, distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information, sequencing and prioritizing information, and observing patterns. 1 Lesson Objectives: To be able to create a Solar System Power Point To be able to research planet facts and rewrite them in their own words To be able to copyright pictures used Prior Knowledge needed: How to use the Microsoft Power Point software. Supplies needed: Each student will need: Planet Books, Science Textbook, Computer with internet access and Microsoft Power Point software, newsprint paper size 4 ½ in x 6 in, pencil, colored pencils or crayons, large plastic Ziploc bag Teacher will need same supplies for demonstration purposes. Lesson Vocabulary: Power Point, slide, text, graphic, image, copyright, facts, opinion, planet names, moon, satellite, orbit, rotation, constellation Lesson Procedure: Lesson 1) Open my website and display planet graphics on promethean board so all can see. List vocabulary words on whiteboard. Explain to students that they are going to create their own graphics and put them into power points during the next week in class. Students may choose to work alone or work with a partner. Before they can use the computer, they have to design ½ of their slides on the newsprint paper. They do not have to color the image but may write, “place image here.” They do have to use books for the facts on ½ or more of their slides. When they are not working on their project, they store newsprint papers in the Ziploc bag. Adaptations for Students with Special Needs: Option 1) Assign a partner for them to work with. Option 2) Create a template for them to fill in with graphics and facts. Extension Activities: Early finishers may add a few extra slides on other objects in our solar system. For example; moon slide, constellation slide, asteroid slide, etc. Slides can be upgraded; transitions, timings, background colors, borders and sound maybe included in project for extra points. 2 How to use in an online classroom: Partners can work together in Google docs. Assessment: Rubric Planet Power Point Student Name: CATEGORY Planets ________________________________________ My Grade 4 3 You have a slide You have a for all 8 planets. paper for 6 or 7 planets. 2 You have slides for 4 or more planets. 1 You have less than 4 planet slides. Facts Each slide has 3 or more planet facts. Each slide has 1 planet fact. Each slide has just the planet name and no facts. Extras I added three or I added two or more extra slides. more extra slides You added one or more extra slide. You added no extra slides. Pictures Each slide has one picture. The picture is recognizable. You are missing one picture. You are missing two pictures. You are missing three or more pictures. Sentences Each slide has more than two quality science sentences. There are NO spelling mistakes. Each paper has two quality science sentences. There are no spelling mistakes. Each paper has one quality science sentences. Each paper has a basic sentence. Independent Work Time I worked quietly and cleaned my mess each day. I worked quietly but left a mess each day. I was a noisy worker and cleaned my mess each day. I was a noisy and messy worker. Each slide has 2 planet facts. Created by, Aggie Walters, July 2011, Moorpark Unified School District 3
