Job Title:
Pharmacy Technician – Aseptic Manufacture and Ward
Services
Reports to:
Senior Pharmacy Technician – Aseptic Unit Co-ordinator,
Chief Technician
Accountable to:
Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Chief Pharmacist
Role Summary:
To participate in the delivery of a responsive and appropriate pharmacy aseptic cytotoxic
reconstitution service, working within quality systems and standards which are maintained in
accordance with principles of GMP.
To work effectively with the Pharmacy Oncology Team in delivery of ward- based oncology
services.
To participate in the delivery of the dispensary and distribution technician services.
To deputise for the Aseptic Unit Co-ordinator when required.
Assisting in identifying and implementing service improvements
Role Responsibilities and Duties:

Report to and take direction from the Aseptic Services Co-ordinator to ensure service
levels are maintained and the unit functions appropriately and safely.

Participate in the preparation and reconstitution of cytotoxic drugs for Inpatients and
Outpatients in accordance with approved procedures.

Participate in the maintenance of all environmental monitoring and quality assurance
systems in order to ensure the continued functioning of the unit, under the guidance
of the Aseptic Unit Co-ordinator. Liaise with external agencies responsible for
monitoring quality systems.

To assist the Aseptic Unit Co-ordinator to schedule service contracts for equipment
used in the Aseptic Unit undergo regular preventative maintenance to ensure that all
equipment is fit and maintained for the purpose intended.

Ensure appropriate stock maintenance and appropriate storage to support service
delivery.

To pro-actively escalate communications to resolve and improve any workflow issues
to ensure all team members are suitably informed. To actively participate in team
meetings.

To ensure efficient, safe work processes are in place to maintain patient safety.

To assist in ensuring that all processes are RPS and GPh.C compliant and be
actively involved with self-inspections where appropriate.

Ensure that all standard operating procedures are appropriate and adhered to and
to participate in the delivery of safe and current practice.

Participate in service review processes in order to ensure current practices are
appropriate. To work with the Oncology Pharmacy Team to ensure a first class
service for patients and consultants

Participate in clinical and service audits in order to maintain department standards.

Ensure delivery of all Health and Safety and COSHH requirements relating
to cytotoxic substances.

To participate in the activities of the British Oncology Pharmacy Association to
ensure professional knowledge is current.

To dispense take home medications for Chemotherapy patients to support an
efficient discharge process. To liase with the Patient Accounts department to ensure
that take home medications allied to chemotherapy treatment are charged correctly.

Accurate charge entry in order to support delivery of the department and hospital
business goals.

To participate in training initiatives in order to support continuing professional
development to ensure that knowledge is current and be aware of new
developments.

To participate in the delivery of a ward top up service to Wards, Clinical Departments
& Theatres. To participate in the stock distribution function and dispensing function of
the technician team when required, to support the technical service and ensure that
departmental service levels are maintained.

To communicate effectively and professionally in order to ensure that the service
delivered by the department is of the highest quality. This includes attendance at and
participation in department meetings.

To support the functioning of the Inpatient Pharmacy / Outpatient Pharmacy and
Pharmacy Stores when necessary to ensure that service levels are optimally
maintained.

To contribute to service review, performance monitoring, professional clinical audit,
research and development.

To contribute to cover so that holidays and time off can be effectively co-ordinated.

Participate in the late duty and Saturday and Bank-Holiday rotas as appropriate.

To undertake any additional duties or projects that may be required by the Chief
Pharmacist.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Work closely with the Health & Safety Advisor on all matters related to Health &
Safety.
Be aware of, and conversant with, the Health and Safety at Work Act and comply
with the regulations set down to ensure safety to patients, visitors and colleagues.
Record all accidents and untoward occurrences according to Hospital policy.
Attend fire lectures and fire drills in accordance with the law and to be fully aware of
the position of fire alarms, emergency equipment and exits.
INTEGRATED GOVERNANCE





Understand implications of Integrated Governance and adhere to hospital
governance policies including the reporting of incidences, near misses.
Ensure compliance to standards in respect of all legislative requirements,
including but not limited to CQC, SHE, DSE, Fire, COSHH, BLS, Manual
Handling, Safeguarding Children & Adults, Information Security and Infection
Control.
Maintain safe working practices and adhere to clinical risk management policy
and recommendations.
Proactively assist in audit and quality assurance programmes.
Adopt the correct administrative procedures when dealing with complaints from
patients/relatives following set policies and procedures.
HEALTH CLEARANCE
Applicants must complete a medical questionnaire and return it to the Hospital’s
Occupational Health Providers.
INFECTION CONTROL
Infection prevention and control is an essential aspect of patient care. All post
holders have a personal obligation to act to reduce Healthcare Associated Infections
(HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in
infection
prevention
and
control and be compliant with all measures required by the Hospital to reduce

HCAIs. Post holders must be familiar with the Hospital’s Infection Control
Policies,including those that apply to
their duties, such as the Hand Hygiene
Policy, the Uniform Policy and Personal Protective Clothing Policy. Post holders
who have clinical responsibilities must incorporate into their clinical activities up-todate evidence that supports safe infection control practices and procedures, for
example the use of aseptic techniques and the safe disposal of sharps.

In the course of your normal work you will come into possession of confidential
information concerning patients, the Bupa Cromwell Hospital and its staff. This
information should be treated confidentially and in accordance with the Bupa
Cromwell Hospital’s policy and the Data Protection Act (1998) and European Union
regulations.
