JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: PHARMACY TECHNICIAN Location: PHARMACY Reports to: LEAD TECHNICIAN in Aseptic Services Professionally Accountable to: CHIEF PHARMACIST Pay Band: PROFESSIONAL & TECHNICAL AGENDA FOR CHANGE BAND 4 Organisation: A Level Pharmacy Aseptic Services Structure Chief Pharmacist Secretary/PA to Chief Pharmacist Accountable Pharmacist/ Aseptic Services Manager Aseptic Services Lead Technician Pharmacists Senior Technicians Technician VACANCY Aseptic Services Senior ATO ATOs Dimensions: Responsible for allocated duties and workload No budgetary responsibilities No resource management responsibilities Job Purpose: To carry out appropriate technical duties within the pharmacy department, working in close liaison with pharmacy, medical and nursing staff and other health care professionals. Duties will be based predominantly within Aseptic Services. Dispensary duties will be undertaken on a rota basis for evenings/weekends/bank holidays. Key Result Areas and Responsibilities: Provide evidence of and maintain registration as a practicing Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Assess and interpret prescription documentation in order to dispense inpatient, outpatient and discharge medication with a high degree of accuracy in a timely manner. Prepare worksheets and labels for a range of products within the Aseptic Unit. To undertake aseptic processing of chemotherapy, parental nutrition and CIVAs items. Deal with telephone requests and queries. Maintain accurate patient records and stock levels, including updating stock lists. Participate in stock maintenance such as stock checks, ordering medications and receiving drugs. Work in a manner which ensures the efficient dispensing and stock control of pharmacy medicines. Perform checks on the work of ATOs and inexperienced technicians, including volume checks for antibiotic reconstitution and during aseptic preparation. Participate in the training of unqualified technical and clerical staff with regards to aseptic services, and general pharmacy policies and procedures. Contribute towards the achievement of departmental targets such prescription turnaround times. Maintain a record of Continuing Professional Development as per GPhC requirements. Counsel patients when providing dispensed medicines using information leaflets and verbal information on common pharmaceutical issues under the supervision of the Responsible Pharmacist. Use appropriate computer programs to enable the dispensing of prescriptions, checking of blood test results and maintain quality of information. Dispense Controlled Drugs in line with regulations, ensuring records and stock are kept and maintained correctly. Key Internal and External relationships - Responsible to the Chief Pharmacist Managed by the Accountable Pharmacist Supervised by the relevant Lead Pharmacy Technician Liaises with other healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, etc.), patients, carers, representatives, etc. Information Management To have a high level of keyboard skills allowing full utilisation of the JAC computer programmes including: • Dispensing suite. • Requisition suite. • Stock control suite. Update both computer and written patient records. Use bar-coding hardware and software to ensure prescriptions are accurately tracked when working in the dispensary. Use other computer software e.g. to calculate formulation of parenteral nutrition solutions and to obtain and review blood results for patients undergoing medication treatments which require special monitoring and chemotherapy. Be able to use the pharmacy tracking system (PTS) for recording prescription progress in the dispensary. Patient/Client Care Assess and interpret prescription documentation in order to dispense medication with a high degree of accuracy. Dispense Controlled Drugs in line with regulations, ensuring records and stock are kept and maintained correctly. Prove and maintain validation of aseptic technique by undertaking regular transfer tests. Prove and maintain validation of dispensing ability by undertaking regular tests. Participate in the development of the pharmacy intravenous additive service by contributing to the design of documentation and procedures. Maintain procedures within the Aseptic Services department in line with the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice. Attend and participate in staff meetings and briefings, and provide input into new changes and developments in the department. Undertake training for aseptic and dispensary roles and ensure all validations are maintained. Be able to cover the pharmacy reception, handling requests and queries. Research and Development Dispense unlicensed and trial medication within set protocols and be responsible for the keeping of up to date records of dispensed prescriptions. To request further supplies to be ordered when required. Participate in data collection for departmental and Trust audit. Policy and Service Development Ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to within the department. Participate in staff meetings and briefings, providing input to changes and new ways of working within the department. Working Conditions Must meet Occupational Health requirements for the job role and pass an Occupational Health check on appointment to the post. Be able to concentrate while working with frequent interruptions to provide information to other staff and patients. Ensure work is carried out accurately in preparing intravenous products for neonatal patients and those undergoing chemotherapy. Dispense medications for inpatient, outpatient and discharge prescriptions for chemotherapy (cancer) patients. This will include calculation of doses, quantity to be supplied, checking of storage conditions, and counselling patients when necessary. Be able to weigh, prepare and measure medications as appropriate. Be able to handle materials for pharmaceutical preparation, and prepare cytotoxic and intravenous preparations using aseptic technique in isolators. Frequent requirement for sitting in a restricted position for substantial amounts of time (when operating isolators etc.) Corporate Responsibilities This is a description of the job, as it is presently constituted.
