Unit 2: Verbs, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections 7th English Verbs 1. Action—tells the action someone or something is performing • Ex: Sally __________ into the room. Verbs 2. Linking—a verb that connects a subject with a word that describes or identifies it; the verb does NOT show action • Forms of the verb “be” are the most common linking verbs Ex: He is a general. What two words does the linking verb connect?_____ Linking verbs Ex: He looks tired. [Why is this verb linking?] • Chart of other possible linking verbs on p. 214 • Tip: if you can substitute “is, are, am” in for the linking verb and the sentence still makes sense, then the verb is linking Verbs 3. Helping—these are placed before other verbs to form verb phrases (all of the words that make up the verb) • Ex: Has opened, is being opened • Has opened; is being opened=verb phrases Adverbs • Definition—modify a verb, adjective, or other adverb • Answers the questions: Where? When? In what way? or How? To what extent? • Usually adverbs end in –ly, but not always Adverbs How can you tell if it is an adverb or adjective? • Adjectives ALWAYS modify a noun or pronoun, so look at what it is describing • Adverbs always modify a verb, adjective or other adverb, so see what it is describing Prepositions • Definition—relate the noun or pronoun following them to another word in the sentence • Chart on p. 246 • Prepositions can be compound (meaning they have 2 or more words) • Ex: Because of, in addition to Prepositions • Prepositional phrase—a group of words beginning with a preposition and ending with a noun or pronoun • The noun/pronoun at the end of the phrase is called the object of the preposition Conjunctions • Definition—connect words or groups of words Types of conjunctions: 1.Coordinating—these connect words of the same kind; they can also connect prep. phrases and entire sentences • ____________________________________ 2.Correlative—these connect words or groups of words and ALWAYS come in pairs • _____________________________________ Interjections • Definition—express feeling or emotion and function independently from the rest of the sentence • Usually they are set apart from the rest of the sentence with a comma or exclamation point Ex: Wow! Oh, Ouch!
