Peer Critique Performer’s name: Evaluator’s name: Title of Piece: Composer/Arranger: As you think about critiquing a performance it is important to consider what you are listening for; in this assignment you are listening for what the performer is doing that is effective as well as what is not quite right. In the end you are listening to help the musician enhance or improve the performance. Think about each of the following areas when listening and evaluating this performance: Tone - Tone is the sound of the instrument. Is it clear? Is it consistent? Is it characteristic of the instrument? Is it confident? Does the performer have good posture? Does the performer use enough air? Note accuracy- does the performer: Play the right notes as far as you can tell? Sound well prepared? Have good finger position? Have difficulty in spots? Rhythm accuracy- All pieces might not have a steady beat throughout, but different note values should sound like they relate to each other if planned tempo changes occur with a piece. Is the beat steady? Does the performer need to slow down in difficult spots? Do the performer and accompanist have the same feel of pulse? Does the performer choose a good tempo; one that sounds good for the piece and the performer can handle confidently? Expression- Music is expressive; a good performance should project an overall concept of what the music communicates. Volume or dynamic contrasts, articulations, changes in tempo, and phrasing (musical sentences) are techniques that can be used to enhance the mood of the piece. Does the performer use dynamics? Does the performer use a variety of articulations? Does the performer use changes in tempo? Does the performer demonstrate good phrasing; breathing in places that don’t disrupt phrases? Stage presence- Stage presence is the quality of self-assurance and effectiveness that permits a performer to achieve a rapport with the audience. Does the performer appear confident and enthusiastic? Does the performer use good posture and instrument position? Does the performer introduce him/herself and the title and composer of the piece?
