Cancer data is great
Local Cancer Knowledge and
Intelligence
• National Cancer Registration Service (NCRS) is now a single
national service formed as part of the transition to Public Health
England (PHE) in 2013 from 8 predecessor cancer registries
• All of the registration teams are now consistently inputting data into
one system (ENCORE) to an agreed data standard – leading to
improvements in consistency in data quality
• Cancer analysts have access to this cancer registration data which
all the national tools and statistics are based on

Examples of local work
• Met with York CCG to talk about how they focussed their efforts –
how did they know where to focus? Where were they doing
well/badly?
• Currently comparing with neighbouring CCGs – discussed that
nearest neighbours were not similar… so more deprived or more
affluent…
• Because this sounded like something that would have value for
other areas we created a tool which compares each CCG to it’s
commissioning for value 10 most similar CCGs for 4 main cancer
types and some key indicators
• Did this as a ‘once for all’ so can be used by our equivalents in other
regions

Examples of local work
•
Asked by our Centre Healthcare Public Health lead (Matt Day) to help
support the SCN to map where patients live, and where they are treated to
support work on treatment pathways
•
Produced analysis showing where patients live and at which hospital they
received first surgery, first chemotherapy and first radiotherapy treatment for
4 main cancer types

Proposed local work
• Proposal to look at doing a ‘Yorkshire and Humber

cancer incidence, mortality, survival etc
• Any thoughts? Does this sound useful?
