ERYTHREA 14671, ATHENS, GREECE Project Field(s) INTERFAITH TOLERANCE/MUSIC/CLASSICAL DANCE/COMMUNITY PROJECT : PRESENTATION OF ORATORIO ‘APOCALYPSE – THE REVELATIONS OF ST JOHN’ Composer : Tassos Ioannides Languages : Greek and English Description The Oratorio “APOCALYPSE – The Revelations of St John” composed by Greek composer Tassos Ioannides is based on the last book of the New Testament, written in Greek by St John the Divine, on the Greek island of Patmos while on exile by the Romans. The visionary, allegorical passages of the text, full of dramatic imagery, form a central part of Christian eschatology and have intrigued and inspired throughout the ages. The “Apocalypse” oratorio is a major work of ninety minutes duration in seven parts, written for full symphony orchestra, mixed chorus, two tenors, a soprano, a baritone and a narrator. The oratorio’s Greek text, based on the words of St John written 2,000 years ago, has also been translated into English by poet, Hellenistic scholar, theologist and musician Philip Grundy, enabling presentation of the work in either language. In this oratorio, the music is at the service of the word; with choral or orchestral approaches which are at times reminiscent of ancient Greek drama, while at other times breaking to polyrhythmic sequences and hymns of praise which ‘embrace’ both Byzantine and western melismatic melodies. Other times the composer introduces us to sonic “explosions” which carry us into John’s dramatic vision like a science fiction film. The work has received the approval and blessing of His Eminence, Ecumenical Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church, Bartholomew I. The text of the Apocalypse is the one book of the Bible accepted by all Christian dénominations.
