Lesson 4:
Respiratory
System
29/04/2017
Starter activity
Write down everything that you know about breathing (respiration) on the whiteboard
Extension
How does respiration
differ during exercise
compared to at rest?
Why?
Learning
Challenges
➔ Remember the structure of the
respiratory system
➔ Understand the function of the
respiratory system and how gaseous
exchange takes place
Activity 1: Respiratory system structure and function
Complete worksheet 1.8 during the video (raise your hand to pause the
video)
Create a diagram to help you to remember and understand
the function of the respiratory system
Complete worksheet 1.9
20 minutes
Extension
Can you explain the
structure and
function in under 2
minutes?
Key terms
Cardio-respiratory
system
The name used to describe the respiratory system and cardiovascular
system working together
Gaseous exchange
The process where oxygen from the air in the alveoli moves into the blood in
the capillaries, while carbon dioxide moves from the blood in the capillaries
into the air in the alveoli.
Haemoglobin
The protein found in red blood cells that transports oxygen (as
oxyhaemoglobin) and carbon dioxide around the body.
Oxyhaemoglobin
A chemical formed when haemoglobin bonds to oxygen.
Alveoli
Small air sacs in the lungs where gaseous exchange takes place.
Capillaries
A network of microscopic blood vessels. They are only one cell thick.
Diffusion pathway
The distance travelled during diffusion. The diffusion pathway is short in
gaseous exchange.
Plenary
Starter: Add to the whiteboard something that you have learned about
breathing (respiration) today
Main: Explain the respiratory system in less than 2 minutes
Learning
Challenges
➔ Remember the structure of the
respiratory system
➔ Understand the function of the
respiratory system and how gaseous
exchange takes place
