The Skeletal System Review What are the functions of the skeletal system? Circle the joints on the skeleton below. 1. Protection 2. Movement 3. Blood Production 4. Support 5. Storage What type of connective tissue attaches muscles to bones? Tendons What is a joint? Place where two bones meet What are some examples of moveable joints? Hinge, Sliding/Gliding, Ball-and-socket, Pivot The Muscular System Review What are the functions of the muscular system? 1. Movement 2. Heat What do muscles need in order to function? How do they get this needed material? ATP (energy) created in cellular respiration 3. Protection, Pump blood through the heart What are they three types of muscle? What purpose does each serve? 1. Skeletal – on bone 2. Cardiac –in heart 3. Smooth – lines organs What is the difference between flexion and extension? Flexion – when bicep contracts and tricep relaxes Extension – tricep contracts and bicep relaxes How do the skeletal and muscular systems work together (interdependently) to create movement? Tendons attach bone to muscle and when you pull on the tendon the bone and the muscle work together to create movement. The Respiratory System Review What are the functions of the respiratory system? Describe the process of breathing. Take in oxygen Inhale the diaphragm contracts and moves down to open chest cavity – bringing air in Exhale the diaphragm relaxes and moves up – moving air out Describe gas exchange at the alveoli. - Carbon dioxide diffuses into the alveoli from the oxygen poor blood in the capillaries that surround the alveoli - Oxygen from the alveoli diffuses into the blood through the capillaries and is brought to the heart and pumped to the rest of the body Describe the role of the respiratory system in the process of cellular respiration. Respiratory system is responsible for providing the oxygen which is needed for cellular respiration to occur. Respiratory system is responsible for disposing of the waste (carbon dioxide) created by cellular respiration where it is exhaled (expelled from the body). The Digestive System Review What are the functions of the digestive system? 1. Absorb nutrients 2. Get rid of wastes 3. Break down food into nutrients What is the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion? Explain how nutrients like glucose get into the bloodstream. The nutrients move into the bloodstream through the capillaries that surround the villi in the small intestine. Describe the role that the digestive system plays in the process of cellular respiration. The digestive system is responsible for providing the nutrient, glucose for cellular respiration.
