Lesson 13 Movement of Water Learning Outcomes • Must: Know how root hair cells are adapted, and what transpiration is. • Should: Explain the key factors that affect the rate of transpiration. • Could: Analyse experimental data. Which organelles are found in a plant cell? Root Hair Cell • Increases the surface area for the absorption of water and minerals. What is transpiration? Transpiration is the loss of water by evaporation from plants. Plants lose water when they open the stomata in the leaves to let in carbon dioxide. The speed at which a plant loses water is called the rate of transpiration. This varies depending on the plant’s environment. The different environmental factors that can affect the rate of transpiration include • Temperature • Humidity • Air Flow • Light intensity Stomata Stomata are pores found on the underside of leaves. Their opening and closing is controlled by guard cells. Transpiration True or False? • Plants lose water when the stomata are closed • The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of transpiration. • Increasing humidity will increase the rate of transpiration. • Transpiration is the loss of water from a plant. • There are more stomata on the top of the leaf.
