CONTROLLED FREQUENCY MOTOR/GENERATOR SET: 400 HZ, AC
210.01
GENERAL
A.
Manufacturer
Motor generator set shall be as manufactured by the Pillar Company.
Substitutions shall require written HGST approval.
B.
Material
Material and parts of the generator set shall be new and unused. Each
component shall be of current manufacture from a firm regularly
engaged in the production of such equipment. The bidder shall submit
with his proposal, a list of three (3) installations of motor-generator sets
engineered by the bidder, which have been installed within the past
three (3) years and are operating satisfactorily, and which use major
components of the same or similar type as the bidder proposed to
furnish.

DESCRIPTION
A.
The motor shall be specified on the drawing as to load requirements
with Class B insulation, 60C rise over 40C ambient, and drip-proof
construction.
B.
Eddy Current Coupling
The eddy current coupling shall be air-cooled, salient pole, Class B
insulated field, 70C rise over 40C ambient, drip-proof enclosed.
C.
Generator
The generator shall be revolving field type, with damper windings,
specified on the drawing as to load requirements and rated for
continuous duty, with temperature rise and design in accordance with
NEMA and ANSI Standards. (70C rise over 40C for Class B
insulation).
The exciter shall be integral with the generator and shall have current
characteristics to meet the requirements of the generator
manufacturer's design. (Static excited type generators or brush less
type generators are acceptable).

D.
Characteristics
The motor and eddy current coupling shall drive the generator over the
specified operating range without exceeding their nameplate ratings
and temperature rises.
The couplings shall be capable of operating continuously at any speed
in the operating range under full load.
The coupling shall be capable of controlling the generator output to +/1 Hz.
E.
Generator Voltage Regulator
A generator voltage regulator shall be provided and controlled from the
control panel board. The regulator shall be a voltage sensing static
type with no electrolytic capacitors or electronic tubes. The regulator
shall be equipped with a control for manual adjustment of the
generator voltage level to +/- 10% of generator-rated voltage. The
regulator shall provide excitation control over a load range of zero to
110 percent of the generator capacity at rated frequencies.
F.
Switchgear
The control board shall contain the following controls:
1.
Motor Circuit Breaker
2.
Motor Starter
3.
Start-Stop Pushbutton
4.
Generator Voltage Regulator
5.
Generator Voltmeter
6.
Generator Ammeter
7.
Generator Voltmeter-Ammeter Switch
8.
Generator Frequency Meter
9.

CONSTRUCTION
A.
B.
C.
Coupling
1.
The eddy current coupling frame shall be of fabricated steel
construction of adequate strength for support of all rotating parts.
2.
The eddy current coupling shall have double shaft extension for
direct connection to driven and driving equipment. (No bolts or
gears shall be used).
Bearings
1.
The drum and field shall be supported on both ends to eliminate a
cantilever load. All bearings shall be arranged for relubrication
when required by the maintenance schedule.
2.
All bearings shall be rated by AFBMA Standards to have
minimum, B-10 life.
Field Poles
The field poles of the eddy current coupling shall be laminated and
either integral with the spider or securely attached to the spider with
bolts or “T” tails. There shall be one field coil for each field pole. After
the coils are assembled on the pole and the pole assembled on the
spider, the coils and pole assembly shall be immersed in insulating
varnish and baked dry. This is a final varnish coat in addition to the
normal individual coil varnish treatment.
D.
Drum
1.
The coupling drum shall be constructed of a high purity iron with
high loss characteristics.
2.
The drum shall be cooled by drawing air axially over the back from
each end by means of axial blades welded to the periphery of the
drum. The coupling frame shall have baffles to confine the air to
the surface of the drum and permit exhaust at the middle. The
coupling field shall be cooled by drawing air in both ends and
exhausting it out the center of the field through the drum. A single
air gap shall be used to allow drum expansion away from the field
when operating at reduced speeds. The drum shall have a
thermal capacity to operate at any speed from 0-97%, when
driving a load where the torque varies as the square of the speed.
3.
Slip Rings
Collector ring systems shall be accessible for each maintenance.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.
Factory Testing
The generator set shall be tested at the facility of the manufacturer.
Testing shall include checking of all automatic controls for proper
functioning and a load test at the standby rating of the unit for a period
of two hours. This testing shall be run at 1.0 pf. During this time, all
operating parameters of the motor and generator shall be monitored
and recorded every thirty minutes. This test may be witnessed by
HGST’s Engineer at his option.
B.
Job site Testing
The generator set shall be tested at the Job site under the supervision
of a representative of the manufacturer. Testing shall include checking
of all automatic controls for proper functioning, and a load test at the
standby rating of the unit for a period of two hours. This testing shall
be run at 1.0 pf. The manufacturer of the generator set shall supply
dummy load for this test. Following this test, the unit shall pickup the
available building load and carry same for a period of one hour.
Operating personnel will be instructed in the proper operation and
maintenance of the unit.
C.
Test Data
Assemble all test data in booklets for submittal.
