COURSE CONTENT:
Theatre History I is a review of different periods of theatrical history, including cultural perspectives, plays, acting styles, staging convention, costuming, and
playwrights. Students will study the history of the theatre and the role the theatre has played in the development of civilization – its value as the embodiment of all
art forms as well as its role in society. Students will continue to learn the terminology and vocabulary of the theatre and some of the basic history of man’s search for
expression.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Recognize major developments in theatre history.

Understand how theatre works in relation to cultures, times, and places

Recognize the distinguishing characteristics of theater from diverse cultures.

Understand the social, political and economic factors that influence the development of theatre in a particular era

Compare and contrast different genres of theatre (e.g., drama, comedy, musical theatre, opera)

Analyze dramatic works in the context of the culture, time, and place in which they originated

Analyze and explain the function of theatre across cultures, times, and places

Assess the social, cultural, and economic impact of theatre arts on society

Examine theatre art careers and the roles of drama professionals in society
1ST NINE WEEKS: GREEK THEATRE
1. Play Analysis-Students will read and view Sophocles, "Oedipus Rex." (the film is NR)
2. Acting Experience-Students will rehearse and perform choral odes and an original Greek tragedy.
3. Design Element- Students will design Greek periaktois and masks.
4. Playwriting-Students will write (as a group or pair) scenes using Aristotle’s Poetics as a foundation.
2ND NINE WEEKS: ROMAN & MEDIEVAL THEATRE
The Summoning of Everyman.”
1. Play Analysis-Students will read, Plautus’, “The Menaechmi Twins,” and “
2. Acting Experience- Students will rehearse and perform original playwriting scenes based on theatrical traditions.
3. Design Element-Students will design Medieval wagons.
4. Playwriting-Students will write an original monologue and Morality play.
3RD NINE WEEKS: ELIZABETHAN THEATRE
1. Play Analysis-Students will read and view William Shakespeare’s, "King Lear.” (the film is rated PG-13)
2. Acting Experience- Students will rehearse and perform Shakespearean monologues and scenes and write an original one act play based on a Shakespearean theme .
3. Design Element- Students will design costume plates for, “King Lear.”
4. Playwriting-Students will write (as a group) a one act play.
4TH NINE WEEKS: RENASSIANCE THEATRE
1. Play Analysis-Students will read Moliere’s, “Doctor In Spite of Himself,” and Carlo Gozzi, “The Love of Three Oranges”
2. Acting Experience-Students will rehearse and perform Commedia scenes.
3. Design Element-Students will design a theatrical backdrop.
4. Playwriting-Students will develop Commedia scenarios.
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO:
1. Perform alone and in-groups.
2. Exhibit appropriate audience behavior.
3. Turn in required written work prior to performance.
4. Meet all assignment deadlines.
5. Participate in all class activities.
6. Take and pass tests (written and performance).
7. Keep a portfolio containing all assignments and grades.
8. Read one published play every nine weeks, and complete specific design work.
SUPPLIES:
1. A folder of specific coloring.
2. 10 plastic savers.
3. 5 dividers.
4. Colored pencils
LATE WORK AND TUTORING:
Assigned work is due 2 days after an excused absence. Individual or group performances will be made up with an alternative assignment or by scheduling an
appointment with the instructor. The entire group must be present to make up group assignments. Additional help is available before and after school.
CLASSROOM RULES:
1. Be on time.
2. Respect self and others.
3. Listen, pay attention and follow directions.
4. NO GUM CHEWING ON STAGE.
GRADING:
