What is Retrogradation?
The phenomenon of retrogradation takes place when a planet reduces the
speed by which it travels, stops (stations retrograde) at a particular degree, and,
as a result, “appears” to move backwards for a fixed amount of time, causing it
to linger longer than usual in a portion of the zodiac. At some point in the cycle,
as it moves “backwards” through the zodiac, the planet slows once more, stops
once more (stations direct), and then moves forward again. Of course this is all
from the standpoint of the observer on Earth. The meaning of the Sanskrit word
“Vakra,” the term for retrograde, is crooked, so it means that when a planet is
retrograde it is going on a crooked course, and things do not happen in the way
things are planned.
According to Jeff Mayo in The Astrologer's Astronomical Handbook:
“All planets revolve around the Sun from west to east, which is termed their
direct motion. Due, however, to the Earth 's own orbital motion in the same
direction, the other planets at certain times appear to the observer on the Earth
to gradually slow down until they "stop" or "stand still," before moving in the
reverse (clockwise) direction to normal. When a planet moves in this reverse
direction along the ecliptic it is said to be retrograde.” (Jeff Mayo, The

p. 113).
Though each of the planets is retrograde for different lengths of time, two astronomical factors that are
shared by each planet are:
1) the planet slows in motion during its retrograde cycle so that it occupies the portion of the sky it
transits for a much longer interval, including signs, stars, and nakṣatras.
2) approximately midway through the retrograde cycle, the planet lies closest to the earth in its orbit
around the Sun.
This summer Venus is not only retrograde but it is conjunct, Mars, conjunct
Jupiter, and conjunct the fixed star Regulus. There is also a square from Saturn.
Even though Venus conjoins Mars approximately every other year, and conjoins
Jupiter once a year, he Venus retrograde conjunction does not happen often as
seen below. These are the dates that retrograde Venus conjoins Mars and
Jupiter since 1953.

Mercury and Venus (which are inferior planets since they lie closer to the Sun than the Earth) will
always form an inferior conjunction with the Sun (i.e., between the Sun and the Earth) midway
through their retrograde cycle. Conjunctions of Sun with either Mercury or Venus alternate their
conjunctions between inferior (when the planet is between the Sun and the Earth and closest to the
earth) and superior (when the Sun is between the planet and the Earth, and the planet is farthest
from the Earth on the far side of the Sun).
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (which are superior planets since they are
farther from the Sun than the Earth, and their orbits lie beyond that of Earth) will form an opposition
to the Sun (with the Earth between the Sun and the planet), at the moment they are closest to the
Earth midway through their retrograde cycle. In Jyotisa, that is considered to be a full aspect, or
drsthi in which the two planets look directly at one another. These planets will only form superior
conjunctions with the Sun.
To recap: Midway through the planet’s retrograde cycle, a planet is closest to the earth.
Mercury and Venus form an inferior conjunction with the Sun when they are retrograde and closest
to the earth. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto form an opposition, or full aspect,
with the Sun when they are retrograde and closest to the earth.
Retrograde Arc or Shadow
The degrees that fall in between the planet's retrograde and direct stations get hit three times--during its initial direct motion before it stations, when it retrogrades, and then when it goes direct
again. This period, which begins the first time a planet hits the degree where it will ultimately
station direct (after it retrogrades), and ends the final time it hits the degree where it stationed
retrograde (after it goes direct), is known as the Shadow Period, or Retrograde Arc.
Some people feel that a planet has the same effect of a retrograde for the entire time it is within the
retrograde arc. This period makes more sense for the faster-moving planets, otherwise the planet is
always within the shadow. However because the retrograde arc, especially with Venus, expands the
sphere of influence, this transit simply becomes a longer one. Every degree within that arc, but
especially the stationary points, are very sensitive in the chart, and will be affected.
If you have a point or personal planet in the span of degrees in between the retrograde and direct
planetary stations, take note of the three times that Venus (or any retrograde planet) will hit that
degree as it moves direct (before it stations retrograde), then retrograde, then direct once again. That
planet will be situated within the Retrograde Arc.
•While all the degrees between the retrograde and direct stations are sensitive due to the fact that they are
hit by the planet three times during the retrograde arc – during its initial direct motion before it stations,
when it is retrograde, and then when it goes direct again - the stationary degrees are especially strong and
can accurately indicate life trends and events, by activating planets, points, or angles in the natal chart.
Because the transiting planet is slow in motion around the stationary point, its effects are always more
potent than a transit (whether direct or retrograde) that moves more quickly.
If a planet is on the stationary retrograde or direct point, it will be even stronger so that a natal planet or
point on the degree of the station, will be most important for the entire span of the Retrograde Arc. In that
case, Venus will hit that degree twice, the moment it stations either retrograde or direct and the other time it
hits that degree.
• Whenever a planet is retrograde, it slows up its speed, so that it occupies the
sign or signs (and nakshatras) it transits during that retrograde for a much
longer interval.
• Venus retrograde period lasts between 41-42 days.
• Venus normally goes through a sign in approximately 25-27 days. During its
retrograde cycle it can stay in one sign for about four months if it stays in only
one sign, or straddle two signs for about five months.
• This means that a normal 1-2 day transit of Venus to a point or planet in your
chart can be extended to 3 1/2 months (as we have seen with the retrograde
arc.). Take note if you have a personal planet or point on or aspecting the
span of degrees in between, and including, the planetary stations, since they
will be vulnerable to the lingering transits of Venus.
• In 2015 Venus retrograde will be in tropical Virgo and Leo and sidereal Leo
and Cancer.
• Tropically, Venus stations retrograde on July 25 at 0 Virgo 46R and goes direct on September
6 at 14 Leo 23D. Sidereally Venus stations retrograde on July 25 at 6 Leo 47R in maghā and
goes direct on September 6 at 20 Cancer 24D in aśleṣā ‘
• Venus straddles tropical Leo and Virgo between June 5 and November 12. It will enter tropical
Leo on June 5 and tropical Virgo on July 18, stations retrograde on July 25 at 0 Virgo 46R,
retrogrades into Leo on July 31, stations direct on September 6 at 14 Leo 23D, and enters Virgo
October 8-November 12.
• Venus will straddle sidereal Cancer and Leo between May 31 and November 2. It will enter
sidereal Cancer on May 31 and sidereal Leo on July 5, stations retrograde on July 25 at 6 Leo
47R, retrogrades into Cancer on August 13, stations direct on September 6 at 20 Cancer 24D,
and enters Leo September 30-November 2.
• Venus will enter aśleṣā at 16 Cancer 40 on June 17. It enters maghā at 0 Leo on July 5.
Retrograde Venus enters aśleṣā on August 13. Direct Venus re-enters maghā on October 1st. It
enters pūrvaphalgunī on October 17 at 13 Leo 20.

Venus Retrograde Periods
• During Venus retrograde periods, the ability to love, value, and earn may be
curtailed or delayed. Money markets will probably not rebound as quickly, and
people may be stuck in relationship limbo. If single, you may not meet people as
quickly, or a new relationship may simply take longer to blossom. Of course this
all depends on how the retrograde affects you personally, and if it affects points
or planets in your chart.
• During Venus retrograde periods, we may look forward to even more saving
and conserving, rather than borrowing and spending. Even if you wanted to
indulge in a second home or new car, you may not have much of a choice, since
lending institutions will continue to be cautious, and extra funds might not be
readily available as in the past.
In general, you cannot hide things during the retrograde because it will be a time when Venus goes from an
evening star, to a period of combustion to the morning star arising. It brings things to light and will move
from a period of relative peace, or what seems to be, to a period of conflict. It can also be vice versa since
retrogrades move things in unexpected ways.
Try not to act impulsively when it comes to matters of the heart or bank account. If it can be avoided, try
not to get married, plan a honeymoon, or ask for a raise or promotion. Wait until Venus goes direct to do
the legwork if you are involved in mediation, lawsuits, or job negotiations, and wait another week or two
until Venus regains its speed, to pursue them fully. What makes Venus retrograde periods productive are
the time and space they offer for planning strategies. Take time to reflect and review areas pertaining to
Venus, or the areas of your chart that Venus occupies and rules.
• If you are born with Venus Retrograde, it simply may mean that you approach love and relationships
differently, or anything else that Venus represents could be done more slowly and may take longer to
manifest. Remember that the Sanskrit world for retrograde is “Vakra,” which means crooked path, so that
retrograde planets indicate a unique way of doing things. It is NOT a recipe for disaster. It is also important
by progression to see when Venus goes direct. Since the retrograde cycle is 41-42 days, if you are born
with Venus retrograde it has to go direct before the age of 42, thereby reversing the slowness.
• By the same token if you have Venus direct, it is possible that at some point in your life (though not
always) that Venus will retrograde by progression, so whatever Venus represents in your chart might take
a different turn.
• Always look at the house Venus occupies and rules, and its aspects to get a complete picture of the
nature of Venus in your chart.

Venus Synodic Cycle
The synodic periods are the length of time from superior conjunction to superior conjunction, or from
inferior conjunction to inferior conjunction with the Sun. It takes Venus approximately 224-227 days
to orbit the Sun but the synodic period from superior to superior conjunction (or inferior to
inferior) with the Sun from a geocentric framework is 583-589 days.
Superior conjunction with the Sun occurs when Venus is farthest from the Earth and the Sun lies
directly between the Earth and Venus. Inferior conjunction occurs when Venus is closest to the
Earth and lies directly between the Earth and the Sun. It takes about 263 days to go from
superior conjunction to the next inferior conjunction and vice versa.
Although each successive Sun-Venus conjunction occurs at different zodiacal positions, it takes
five synodic periods or, eight years, for the specific type of Sun-Venus conjunction to return to
approximately the same zodiacal sign and degree. This causes a five-pointed star, or pentagram
to be formed. Every four years the other type of conjunction falls on approximately the same
degree.

Inferior Conjunction
These conjunctions also mark the transition from evening to morning star, and back again.
As an inferior planet, Venus can be seen as a morning star, which rises and sets before the Sun, and as an
evening star, which rises and sets after the Sun. When Venus is a morning star, it may be seen up to three
hours before the Sun rises, but since the Sun is the brightest object in the sky, Venus will soon fade from
sight, and will not be seen again until the next morning.
As an evening star, Venus can be seen for up to three hours in the night sky after the Sun has already set.
Venus is most clearly seen when it is an evening star, especially when it is closest to the earth prior to its
inferior conjunction with the Sun, during which it will not be visible for 3-8 days. After this period of
invisibility, it rises before the Sun as the morning star in the East until it reaches superior conjunction.
In the same way, the superior conjunction marks the changeover from morning star to evening star.
Because Venus is on the far side of the Sun during superior conjunction, it will disappear from view for
about two months after that without being visible, after which it appears as the evening star in the West. As
it moves closer to the earth, the planet becomes brighter and brighter until it begins to retrograde and form
its inferior conjunction with the Sun once again. (The first and last time Venus is seen rising and setting as
morning or evening Star before and after its conjunction with the Sun is called its “heliacal rising” or
“heliacal setting.” Many ancient cultures originally thought the morning and evening star appearances of
Venus were two different luminaries, rather than two manifestations of the same one.)
It is no wonder that the Sumerians/Babylonians (and other cultures), who worshipped the Goddess
Inanna/Ishtar as a manifestation of the planet Venus, said that the morning star's appearance in the
eastern sky roused the soldiers to war, while the evening star's arrival in the western sky induced
passionate lovemaking followed by restful sleep. As a result, the aggressive morning star and the soothing
evening star exemplified the two faces of Inanna/Ishtar: the wrathful goddess of war and the tranquil love
and fertility deity.
• Powerful events often take place around the time of these conjunctions,
especially at the heliacal rising after inferior conjunction, since Venus heliacally
rises with a white light that comes up like a lightning bolt. The affair between
Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton was revealed on January 21, 1998, five days
after the inferior conjunction of January 16, 1998, corresponding to the heliacal
rising.
• Ronald Reagan died on June 5, 2004, before an inferior conjunction on June
8, 2004. Day of mourning declared for June 9, 2004. The state funeral was held
in Washington D.C, and interment later that day in California, on June 11, 2004,
three days after the conjunction, which also corresponded with the heliacal
rising.
