DIVISION FACT SHEET Division is the reverse of multiplication! The most common method for dividing numbers without using a calculator is often referred to as “The Bus Stop Method”. You may well have come across this before during previous studies. 1. BUS STOP METHOD Think of division as a stepped process, the number of steps will be determine by the The number being divided is called the dividend. The number you are dividing by is called the divisor number of digits you are working with. Breaking up big division calculations into smaller steps makes the process more straightforward. Using a 1 digit divisor and a 3 digit dividend, in this example 4 and 936, means you need to take 3 steps… 2 4 9 3 6 - 8 1 4 2 3 9 3 6 - 8 - 1 3 1 2 STEP 1 - Start with the number on the left… 4 goes into 9 twice (2 times), Put a 2 above the 9 and then show your working out underneath i.e. 4 x 2= 8, so 9 – 8 = 1 STEP 2 - Now move across a column… 4 doesn’t go into 3, so we must ‘carry the 3’ over, joining it the remaining 1 from step 1 i.e. it is now 13. 4 goes into 13 three times (3 times) and then show your working out underneath i.e. 4 x 3 = 13, so 13 – 12 = 1 1 Created by: Naomi Smith Last updated May 2015 DIVISION FACT SHEET 4 2 3 4 9 3 6 STEP 3 - Last column… You still have 1 left over from the last step, so this must be joined with the 6 to make 16. 4 goes into 16 four times (4 times) with nothing left over. 4 x 4 = 16, so 16 – 16 = 0 and so the process stops. - 8 - 1 3 1 2 1 6 - 1 6 0 The larger your divisor, the more steps you have! Now let’s try an even larger number with a two digit divisor! 0 3 3 2 2 7 6 0 2 7 6 - 6 4 1 2 Created by: Naomi Smith 8 8 STEP 1 – first column 32 does not go into 7, so put a 0 above the 7 and carry the 7 across to make 76. STEP 2 – 32 goes into 76 twice (2 times) and then show your working out underneath, i.e. 32 x 2 = 64, so 76 – 64 = 12 Last updated May 2015 DIVISION FACT SHEET 3 2 0 2 4 7 6 8 - 6 4 1 2 8 - 1 2 8 STEP 3 – Bring down the 8 to join with your 12 left over the previous step, making 128. 32 goes into 128 four times (4 times) and then show your working out underneath, i.e. 32 x 4 = 128, so 128 – 128 = 0 and so the process stops. 0 Now let’s try using numbers where there will be a remainder… 4 0 8 6 3 4 7 - 3 2 2 7 - 2 4 3 4 does not go into 3, so put a 0 above the 3 and carry the 3 across to make 34. 4 goes into 34 eight times (8 times) and then show your working out underneath, i.e. 4 x 8 = 32, so 34 – 32 = 2 Bring the 7 down to join with your 2 left over from the previous step, making 27 4 goes into 27 six times (6 times) and then show your working out, i.e. 4 x 6 = 24, so 27 – 24 = 3 left over. You now don’t have any more numbers to join to the remainder of 3 from the previous step…so here’s what you do.. You now have two options… Option 1 - Write your answer as a fraction, i.e. 86 ¾ , or Option 2 – Write your answer as a decimal i.e. ¾ is the same as 0.75 so your answer would be 86.75 Created by: Naomi Smith Last updated May 2015
