What are atoms like? ATOMIC THEORY • The idea that matter consists of small particles called atoms. • The atom is the smallest particle that makes up matter and can not be further broken down. • Atomic models of matter have existed for thousands of years, but the generally accepted model by John Dalton was not published until 1809. Atoms are loosely arranged ATOMS IN A SOLID • In a solid , atoms are arranged very neatly and densely.
