Lesson Plans Pre-AP Biology Evolution Unit Chapters 15, 16, 17 and 18 (February 22- March 11 2016)
SOL: Bio.8 The Student will investigate and understand how populations change through time.
Key concepts include:
a) evidence found in fossil record
b) how genetic variation, reproductive strategies, and environmental pressures impact the
survival of populations
c) how natural selection leads to adaptations
d) emergence of new species
e) scientific explanations for biological evolution
Objectives: SWBAT:





Describe the pattern Darwin observed among organisms of the Galapagos Islands
State how Hutton and Lyell described geological change
Identify how Lamarck thought species evolve
Explain how natural selection is related to species’ fitness
State Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection
Monday 2/22
Today students will complete the Ch. 12/13 Test so that they can show my knowledge of DNA history, DNA
structure and Protein synthesis. They will know they understand this when they can complete the assessment
with at least 85% accuracy.
CW: Test Chapter 12 & 13
HW: Chapter 15 ppt -Fill in Notes/Read Ch. 15 in text
Tuesday 2/23
Today students will use computers, and the CD Biology Concepts so that they can trace Darwin’s Trip around the
World aboard the Beagle. They will know they have accomplished this when they have filled out #1-18 on their
summary chart using the question prompts provided.
CW: CD Voyage of the Beagle: Fill in Chart, Answer questions, Work on Map, Evolution Mini station act. (Answer
questions on WS as you visit different Stations)

Wednesday 2/24 Today students will use computers, and the CD Biology Concepts so that they can complete tracing Darwin’s Trip
around the World aboard the Beagle. They will know they have accomplished this when they have traced the
voyage of the Beagle on their maps & completed the table.
CW: Complete CD Activity Voyage of the Beagle, complete mini station activity, map, & create NOVA account for
Evolution Labs (Missions 1-5)

Thursday 2/25
Today students will move from station to station within the classroom so that they can discover and review
different aspects of evidence for evolution, individuals important in the history of the development of the theory
of Evolution and learn about comparative cytology, anatomy and embryology and its relevance to Evolution. They
will know they understand this when they can correctly fill in their evolution mini-station tracking sheet with
100% accuracy.

Friday 2/26
Today students will use an online simulation so that they can model changes in peppered moth populations due to
pollution and observe how species can change over time. They will know they understand this when they can
construct a line graph using their results from the simulation and correctly interpret their results & graph.
CW: Web Activity on Peppered Moth, Start Lab on Horse Fossils
HW: Complete Horse lab, Due Monday, Missions 1-3 due Tues.
Monday 2/29
Today students will view various short videos on population genetics and Speciation so that they can
learn about the conditions necessary for new species to evolve and how we measure population
evolution. They will know they understand this when they can identify components needed for a new
species to evolve and give examples. Also, they should be able to determine the % of certain populations
that possess a trait and calculate the frequency of genes in a population.
CW: Video on Hardy Weinberg + WS, Video on Speciation + WS
HW: complete video notes, start Ch. 16-17 fill in notes using ppt online at Teacher website
Tuesday 3/1
Today students will conduct a lab using 2 different types of crackers so that they can simulate the impact
of natural selection on a population of ducks. They will know they understand this when they can
describe how the number of light & dark quackers changed over the period of 5 generations and explain
that evolution affects populations, not individual organisms.

Wednesday 3/2
Today students will complete the Chapter 15 Quiz so that they can demonstrate their knowledge of
evolutionary mechanisms, types of evidences for evolution and people important in the development of
Evolutionary theory. They will know they understand this when they can complete the quiz with at least
85% accuracy.

HW: Chapter 18 Fill in notes – complete using ppt on teacher website

Monday 3/7
Today students will view short videos on classification & Domains so that they can gather information
about how we organize the diversity of life on our planet. They will know they understand this when
they can list the domains, Kingdoms and correctly classify a cat according to the proper taxa on their
classroom worksheet.
CW: Video Notes: Classification of Living Things, 3 Domains of Life, Archae, Bacteria and Protists
HW: Begin filling in Classification Chart with major characteristics of each group, finish 1st video.
Tuesday 3/8
Today students will use a dichotomous key so that they can identify 14 shark families and examine the
method used to make a key. They will know they understand this when they can construct their own key
that will identify another group of organisms.
CW: Quiz Chapter 16-17, Finish Chart, Review Classification notes, Shark Lab
HW: Complete Shark Lab, complete
Wednesday 3/9
Today students will use class time to review evolution topics so that they can ensure they are prepared to
demonstrate their knowledge of the Theory of Evolution, and the processes that drive it. They will know
they understand this when they can competently and confidently participate in active classroom
discussion and teacher directed questioning.

HW: Study for Test Chapters 15-18
Thursday 3/10
Today students will complete the Chapter 15-18 test so that they can demonstrate their knowledge of
