THE UNIVERSITY OF HARRAN
THE FACULTY OF THEOLOGY
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
MISUNDERSTANDIGS AND TRUE ISLAM
28-30 OCTOBER 2016, ŞANLIURFA-TURKEY
The aim and the importance of the symposium
Islam which was revealed to protect people from infidelity, polytheism and immorality has two main
sources, Qur’an and Sunna. The various commentaries of Muslim scholars on the verses of Qur’an
and the hadith enlightened people throughout history. From these two sources, many different
sciences such as tafsir (exegeses), aqaid (faith), kalam (theology), Islamic law, and tasawwuf
emerged. Although Islam was correctly understood and practiced at the time of the Prophet,
different perceptions emerged in later times for various reasons. Some of these different perceptions
led to the lost of true meaning and originality of Islam. It is a historical reality that there are heretical
sects which have either ifrat (exaggeration) or tafrit (deficiencies). The orientalists who are
interested in the sources of Islam also caused to misconceptions. The misconceptions about Islam
which highlighted by some media have no relation at all with true Islam. These misconceptions not
only lead to prejudice of non-Muslims but also brings about the emergence of thoughts of some
Muslims which are in contradiction with the main principles of Islam.
We, as the staff of the Faculty of Theology, decided to hold a symposium in order to provide a
platform to discuss important questions such as; how did these misconceptions emerge? In which
areas did they intensify? What kinds of impact did they have on individual, family and the whole
Muslim community? What are the true principles of Islam vis a vis misconceptions?
We believe that scholars will participate in this international symposium ’MISUNDERSTANDINGS
AND TRUE ISLAM’’ within the aforementioned framework. We hope that the contribution of the
scholars will contribute to rectify the misunderstandings, which caused many troubles in the Muslim
and the human world.
