Earth’s Interior Processes
Plate Techtonics
•  The theory that the earth’s lithosphere
(crust and top of mantle) called plates
move slowly on top of the earth’s
asthenosphere (upper mantle).
•  Alfred Wegener – proposed that the
earth’s continents were once joined in a
single supercontinent (known as Pangea)
and broke apart into the continents
–  This process was known as continental drift
Mantle Convection
•  Hot rock from the middle of the earth rises
and as it cools moves back to the middle
of the earth to be reheated.
–  This is what causes the plates to move!

Seafloor spreading
•  The process by which new oceanic crust is
created at mid ocean ridges as older crust
moves away
–  Magma pushes out of mid ocean ridges
moving old crust farther away

Plate Boundaries
•  Divergent Boundaries – plates moving
away from each other
•  Convergent Bounderies – plates colliding;
often one plate is subducted
•  Transform Boundaries – plates slide past
each other
