Both the Qur'an and the Sunnah guide the lives of Muslims, but what is the main difference between the two? The Qur'an contains the words of Allah, and the Sunnah contains stories of Muhammad's words and actions First Pillar: Shahadah - declaration of faith. "There is no god but God (Allah), and Muhammad is his prophet." Second Pillar: Salat - "prayer is the proof [of faith]." Daily ritual prayer 5 times a day; at dawn, noon, midday, sunset, and after nightfall. Third Pillar: Zakat - "purification [of wealth]." According to the teachings of Islam, Muslims must share one fortieth of their income with poorer neighbors to control greed. Fourth Pillar: Siyam - fasting (going without food). Muslims fast during Ramadan (ninth month of the Muslim calendar) during daylight hours, to emphasize self control and make them realize what it would be like to be poor and hungry Fifth Pillar: Hajj - pilgrimage (journey to a holy site) to the city of Makkah. All adult Muslims that can do so are expected to make the hajj once in their lifetime. 5 PILLARS OF FAITH The Five Pillars of Islam.mp4 October 01, 2010 QUICK REVIEW! Making good decisions each day (coming to school prepared, not doing drugs, giving your teacher presents! jk) Self-defense, taking care of your family October 01, 2010 NOW YOU WILL ANSWER OUR ESSENTIAL QUESTION BY CREATING AN ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT! The Life of Muhammad Illuminated Manuscript Directions: In the middle ages, a common form of artistic expression was the illuminated manuscript. An illuminated manuscript was a highly decorated document that emphasized the visual stimulation of those who viewed it. Throughout the world, the majority of people were illiterate (could not read) so they depended on the art surrounding the writing of the manuscript to gather meaning. Here is what you are to do: 1. Using your 7.2.2 Life of Muhammad Notes you will create an illuminated manuscript including the four Arabic words that you wrote in calligraphy and the symbols you created (one from each section of chapter 8). Make sure that your manuscript is very colorful and decorated with geometric shapes, symbols, even floral patterns. ***Be careful to NOT include pictures of people or animals. 2. In the center of your illuminated manuscript write a response to the essential question: Who was Muhammad and how did he influence the lives of Arabians? Your response should focus on his call tto prophethood, his basic teachings, the influence Muhammad in uniting the people of Arabia and the impact he had on their spiritual and social beliefs. You should use your 7.2.2 LIfe of Muhammad Notes as well as your 7.2.3 Teachings of Islam Fact Flaps and any other resources you feel will help you to organize the best answer possible. A checklist has been provided to you to track your progress towards completion.
