What Are Some Plant Structures?
Science Words
Root [ROOT] structure that absorbs water and minerals from the soil and also anchors the plant to
the ground
Stem [STEM] structure that has tubes to carry water, sugar, and minerals to different parts of the
plant. Stems also support the plant.
.
Leaf [LEEF] plant part that uses sunlight to produce sugar for the plant’s food
Photosynthesis [foht•oh•SIN•thuh•sis] the process plants use to make their food. During
photosynthesis, plants use energy from the sun to change carbon dioxide and water into sugars and
oxygen.
Photosynthesis and photograph begin the
same way. You need light in order to take a
photograph. Plants need light in order to do
photosynthesis.
During photosynthesis,
plants use water (1),
energy (2), and carbon
dioxide from the air to
produce sugar, which is
stored in the leaves (3).
Chlorophyll [CLAWE•uh•fihl] what makes leaves appear green. Chlorophyll captures energy from
the sun
Chlorophyll and color begin with the same sound. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green color.

Science Concepts
Types of roots
1.Grasses have fibrous roots, which are thin
and branching and grow close to the surface.
2.
Carrots have taproots, which are thick and grow deep; taproots store food.
Types of stems
1.The hard, woody stem of a tree is called a trunk;
most other plants have soft, green stems.
2-Soft green stems support other plants such as daisies.
The groups of plant kingdom
Vascular plants
Nonvascular plants
-Vascular means having tubes that carry water and food
to other parts of the plants like flowering plants.
-Non vascular means without tubes.
Non vascular plants do not have any tubes to carry water and food between the plant parts. They absorb
water from the surroundings.

A-Choose the best answer:
1-Which statement about nonvascular plants is correct?
They have roots that take in water.
They have root-like structures that anchor the plant in the soil.
They make up the majority of all plants.
They do not use photosynthesis to make food.
2-Which of the following vegetables is a root?
3-Which part of a vascular plant produces food through photosynthesis?
flower
veins
root
leaves
4-Which list shows everything that plants need to produce their own food?
oxygen, carbon dioxide, sugar
sunlight, carbon dioxide, water
sugar, water, carbon dioxide
carbon dioxide, water, sugar
5-The picture shows the steps that happen during photosynthesis.
What is happening at Step 4 in the picture?
Sugar is entering the leaf, and water vapor is exiting.
Carbon dioxide is entering the leaf, and water vapor and oxygen are exiting.
Carbon dioxide and chlorophyll are entering the leaf, and oxygen is exiting.
Water vapor and chlorophyll are entering the leaf, and carbon dioxide is exiting.
