Tragedies are also about the past and the characters typically wore dark colored clothing. A comedy is light hearted, had elements of humor, and was more about the present. 3. Why do you think only men were permitted to participate in theater productions? Only men were allowed to participate in theater productions because it was a privilege meant for male citizens. It was mostly likely not considered “appropriate” for women to see such things. Station 2: Ancient Greek Music 1. Where does the word music come from? Music comes from Muses, the daughter of Zeus and goddess of creative and intellect. 2. What is one way we learn about ancient music today? We study remains of musical instruments left behind and drawings to help us figure out what music may have sounded like. 3. In your opinion, how would you describe the sound of the ancient Greek music? Station 3: The Peloponnesian War 1. Why did this war begin? Which type of clothing showed a person’s wealth and status in ancient Greece? Any colored or dyed cloth showed a person’s wealth and status in ancient Greece. 2. Why did women apply chalk and lead on their faces to appear pale? Women applied chalk to their skin to appear pale as a symbol of status. Rich Athenian women stayed inside most of the day and did not have to leave. It was seen as a sign of prestige as well as fashionable.
