Come on America
What food is included in your daily diet? Processed food makes up 70 percent of the U.S diet
alone.
What makes American’s want to always go out and get food that they know is not good for
them? Not all processed food is the same, however. The USDA classifies processed food in any
edible that’s not a raw- agricultural commodity. So even pasteurized milk and frozen fruits and
vegetables count. Also some Americans find processed foods to be tasty, convenient, and
affordable choices while others contend that the combination of sugar, fat, salt and flavoring in
these foods promotes over eating and contributes to obesity.
What are the main causes that attributes to eating so much processed food? Almost 1,000
calories a day of person’s diet come solely from highly processed foods. The bestselling
products that we buy daily are refined breads, grain-based desserts like cookies, sugary sodas,
juice, sport drinks and energy drinks. No surprise to us Americans our favorite types of foods to
buy is 61% of highly processed foods. As well as 16% was moderately processed foods and
drinks.
In 2015 a nation-wide analysis of U.S grocery purchases reveals that highly processed foods
make up more than 60% of the calories n food we buy, and these items tend to have more fat,
sugar, and salt than less processed foods. (PHD, 2015) Using software that picked out words in
the nutrition and ingredient labels. The 1.2 Million products were placed into four categories:
Minimally processed, basic processed, moderately processed, and highly processed.
In another research study from 2000-2012. This was the first study of its kind. Researchers
scrutinized our diets by analyzing a massive set of data of the foods we buy at the grocery

store. The stats came from 157,000 shoppers, who tracked their edible purchases from 20002014, for anywhere from 10 months to 14 years. Preference’s for highly processed foods were
remarkably stable over time. Which likely has imperfections for our health, since the study also
found that highly processed foods were higher in saturation fat, sugar, and salt. But
interestingly, no U.S. study has yet looked at the link between highly processed foods and
health outcomes like obesity, and diabetes. (powell, 2015)
What can be done to balance healthy eating along with some processed foods? We have been
told by the center of science in the public interest says we could solve the lives of 100,000
Americans every year if we cut out 2,000 milligrams of salt a day. A balance diet means getting
the right types and amounts of foods and drinks to supply nutrition and energy for maintaining
body cells, tissues, organs, and for supporting normal growth and development.
An unbalanced diet can cause problems with maintenance of: Body tissues, brain and nervous
system function, growth and development. It can also cause problems with bone and muscle
systems. There are several guidelines available to help you plan your balanced diet such as the
food Guide Pyramid and the U.S dietary guidelines. To achieve a balanced diet, you must eat a
variety of foods from each of the food groups. You also need to know what the healthy choices
from each food group are.
