1. Distinguish between monotheism and polytheism.
Mono = belief in only 1 God
Poly = belief in more than one god
2. Why did some ancient polytheistic religions practice human sacrificing? What
was the point? Polytheistic religions practiced human sacrificing to offer human
blood to their gods because they believed if they pleased their gods then their
gods would provide for them.
3. Distinguish between Dharma, Karma, and Reincarnation. All three are important
aspects of the Hinduism religion. Dharma- the religious and moral duties one
should follow. Kharma- good and bad deeds one does throughout one’s life.
Reincarnation- being reborn into a new life.
4. What was the main principal or guiding belief of Buddhism? Man’s suffering is
caused by desire. If desires are reduced , human suffering will be reduced.
5. Who founded Buddhism? Where? Siddartha Gautama in India.
6. Where did Abraham lead the Hebrews to based on the message he received
from God? He led them to the promised land, Canaan which is modern day
Israel.
7. Which empire was Jesus born into? Roman empire. Why did Jesus have so
many enemies when his message was one of positivity and love? He and his
message were a threat to the power of the Roman emperors. They wanted to
be the most important and powerful force in the lives of the people.
8. Why was Muhammad important to the religion of Islam? He is considered the
last prophet and believed to have received the message of God.
9. What are the 5 pillar of Islam and why are they important to the faith? The 5
pillars are important to Muslims because they are a guide for how Muslims
should live their life as taught by Muhammad.
- Testimony of faith, prayer, giving to the poor, fasting, pilgrimage to holy city
10. What are the sacred texts of Hinduism- the Vedas
Judaism- Torah
Christianity- Bible
Islam- Qur’an
11. Why were Christians persecuted in the Roman Empire? The message of
Christianity was such a threat to the strength of the emperors. Also,
Christians refused to participate in the Roman army.
12. What are two major similarities between the three main monotheistic
religions?
- location of origin is similar
- belief in same God
- each have their own place of worship and holy book
