Everett, Wash. — It's Shakespearean verse with poodle skirts, greasers, and cheerleaders! Join
KIDSTAGE TeenSelect Everett February 9-18, 2007 for its 1950s rock n’ roll production of A
Midsummer Night’s Dream. Based on a version created by Seattle theatre icon, Arne Zaslove, this A
Midsummer Night’s Dream features Shakespeare’s original text recast in a more contemporary setting,
featuring 50s hit songs such "Why do Fools Fall in Love?," "Goin' to the Chapel," and "Love Potion #9"
to highlight the emotional narrative of this classic comedy of teenage romance, and an elopement run
amok. Enter the 1957 Athens High School gymnasium as students and faculty alike prepare for a magical
prom night full of romance and mayhem.

Dream
“Setting A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a 1950s high school environment allows the themes of
the play to be explored in a more familiar time and place,” said Janet Cole Hamilton, KIDSTAGE
program manager and director for the musical. “None of Shakespeare's words are changed or updated,
but when you costume the actors in 50s garb and sing 50s songs that relate to the characters, somehow it
all becomes less threatening. It's a goal of the TeenSelect program to provide artistic challenges for our
students. And Shakespeare's language does that.”
A Midsummer Night’s Dream features 22 advanced young actors in seventh through 12th
grade in a full-scale musical that includes simple, but professionally-designed sets, costumes,
lights, and sound. After successfully auditioning, actors are directed and choreographed by
theatre professionals.
The production is directed by KIDSTAGE program manager and instructor, Janet Cole
Hamilton, choreographed by dancer and local actor, Nicole Boote, with musical direction by John
Allman, scenic design by Scott Fyfe, lighting design by William McCoubrey, and costume design
by Meredith Armstrong.
