CQ: What were the greatest areas of needs in terms of supplies for both sides? Why is
the Civil War considered the first “Modern War”? According to the chart, what are the
areas of strength and weakness for both sides? What is the “Anaconda Plan” and what
does it state? Who created the plan?
The Union & The Confederacy
Background
Money in the Confederacy wasn’t worth anything because of the tremendous amount of
inflation.
Prior & During the Civil War,
 The Union was much better supplied than the Confederacy.
 The union controlled railroads for transportation
 Factories for production
 The Union had much better supply than the Confederacy
 The Confederacy was an agrarian society
At the start of the Civil war,
 the biggest weakness of the UNION was a LACK OF SOLDIERS because the
Union was not able to rally enough people .
 the biggest need for the CONFEDERACY was FOOD AND CLOTHING
THE CONFEDERACY - Supplies
 was not a factory system and had to find another way to get their supplies
 gained their supplies by capturing weapons and supplies on the battlefield
 government owned factory that the south controlled supplied the Confederates
 European imports – many European countries were hoping the Confederacy
would win the Civil War. Then the US would be weakened because it would be
split in half.
 Private business donations
 Even still, the CONFEDERACY was short-handed in terms of supplies.

The First Modern War
The Civil war is often known as the first “Modern War”.
There was extensive use of technology
o Telegraph
o Iron plated ships
o Mass-produced weapons
The size of the armies on both sides
o Very large armies
Extensive battle plan coordination between the Army & Navy (both Sides)
o The CONFEDERACY did have some ships
The use of Trench Warfare
o Soldiers stay in a trench for long amounts of time and defend the
surrounding area. They did use the phalanx (line up and fight) as well,
but trench warfare was introduced.

The Anaconda Plan

Was the initial plan brought to president Lincoln for stopping the rebellion of
the Southern States. (This was their military strategy)
The plan was proposed by then General-n-Chief Winfield Scott
The main purpose of the plan was to blockade the Southern Ports, and for the
Union to advance its navy down the Mississippi River.
This would allow the union to cut the south in half.
The blockade was a bit more passive.
This plan was bothersome to many who wanted a much harsher plan that
would crush the south.
