over the Internet
Multimedia and Business
• E-commerce –
▫ Business to Business transactions (B2B) – some
web sites are set up to deal with customers that
are other businesses, not individual customers
Multimedia and Business
• E-commerce continued –
▫ Business to Consumer transactions (B2C) – e-tailing
instead of retailing
 Affects – some experience a loss of consumers, but if
they have a web site they may attract new customers;
increase for shipping companies like UPS and Federal
Express
 Advantage – more convenient
 Disadvantages – less personal and returning items may
be more difficult
 Many e-commerce sites send cookies (a small file) to
online shoppers’ computers to obtain information about
the shoppers and target advertising to them
Multimedia and Business
• Customer service – to assist customers who have
questions or problems with products or services
▫ Can be faster than getting help over the phone
▫ For businesses it can be less costly than having a
large staff of people answering customer calls
Multimedia and Business
• Advertising – banners and pop-ups
▫ By selling other companies the right to advertise
on a web site, the web site developer can make
enough money to pay for the site and maybe even
make a profit
▫ Targeted advertising – ads that are directed to
web users on the basis of information collected
through cookies…web sites gather information
about web users, analyze the information, and
display advertisements for the products and
services they are most likely to buy
Multimedia and the Workplace
• Employee training – at their own desks or
training centers
• Business travel – between cell phones and the
Internet, briefcases are like portable
offices…business can be conducted anywhere
• Teleconferences – using the Internet, cameras,
and telephone lines participants can discuss
plans and strategies…can view or create reports,
drawings or other kinds of information together
Multimedia and the Workplace
• Telecommuting – using computers at home in
much of the same way they would in the office
▫ Can spend less money on childcare, business
attire, travel, and other work-related expenses
▫ Employers – offers reducing expenses for office
space, electricity, etc
Multimedia and the Workplace
• Working Conditions and Expectations – because
of always being connected…people spend more
hours working
▫ Can lead to making more money for the company
or advancement for the employee but can also lead
to isolation, stress, and a general loss of well-being
Multimedia and the Workplace
• Company Networks
▫ Groupware – software that uses passwords and
enables a group of coworkers to collaborate on
projects by sharing documents, schedules, and
other information over a network
▫ Intranets – a web site that is available only to
employees, who must have a password to enter
 Rely on firewalls to keep outsiders from gaining
access (firewalls – a means of preventing
unauthorized access to a network using hardware,
software, or both)
Multimedia and the Workplace
• Company Networks continued
▫ Extranets – similar to intranets but includes web
sites used by authorized people outside the
organization
Publishing, News, and Entertainment
• Online news
• Webzines – e-magazines, e-zines, or zines—
magazines that are published on the web…some
are traditional magazines on the web and some
are online only
• Blogs
• Online books
Publishing, News, and Entertainment
• Music distribution – by using peer-to-peer (P2P)
users in distant locations can share file storage
and other resources…Apple iTunes
▫ Must follow copyright laws
• Multimedia and Recreation – games…playing
for hours can promote isolation
• Social Interaction – encourages communication
among people all over, but can also encourage
isolation by reducing the amount of time we
spend face to face
Multimedia and Education
• Distance learning – enables students to work
from home or other remote sites and
communicate with teachers and classmates
through the Internet
▫ Virtual schools – a site in a distance learning
program that has interactive features
▫ Online schools – many colleges and universities
offer some of their classes online
Multimedia and Education
• Computer-Based Training (CBT) – method of
education that allows people to learn at their
own pace
▫ Web-based training (WBT) – putting it on the
Internet
Multimedia and Health Care
• Telemedicine – the use of the Internet to allow
physicians to diagnose and monitor patients at
remote locations
• Medical Training - Physicians, nurses, medical
researchers, and technicians can get information
or use simulations as part of their training
Multimedia and Health Care
• Medical Information for the Public – can prompt
communication between health care providers
and their patients but can also lead to people to
ignore their doctors’ advice and instead trust the
opinions of strangers with no medical training
▫ Not all multimedia web sites are reliable…check
your sources
