Lesson 3: Narcotics, Stimulants, and Depressants Narcotics- specific drugs that are obtainable only by prescription and are used to relieve pain. Opium- a liquid from the poppy plant containing substances that numb the body. (historically narcotics were made from opium) Highly addictive so they are controlled by law. Euphoria- feeling of well being or elation Abusing these drugs can result in tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, and addiction. Withdrawal- symptoms that occur after chronic use of a drug is reduced or stopped. • Symptoms can be unbearable. • Pain in muscle and bones, sleeplessness, diarrhea, agitation, and vomiting. Illegal narcotic Made from morphine. Usually injected but can sometimes be smoked. Regular users develop a tolerance and need more and more of the drug. Extremely hard to quit and may experience extremely painful withdrawal symptoms. Legal narcotic, available with a prescription. Controls severe pain with cancer, back pain, or arthritis. Long term effects increase tolerance, which leads to physical addiction. Withdrawal is similar to all narcotics. Look at page 347. Stimulant- drugs that speed up the activity of the brain and spinal cord. Raise heart rate, blood pressure, and metabolism. Users may feel exhilarated, or excited which others may feel anxious. STIMULATES THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Results in aggressive behavior and can include extreme weight loss and loss of physical strength. METHODS- SNORTED, SWALLOWED AND SMOKED Speed CAN OVERDOSE AND DIE. VERY ADDICTIVE CAN BE SNORTED, SMOKED, or injected SHORT LIVED HIGH ONLY LASTS UP TO 30 MINUTES. When using drug people tend to binge and use large quantities of the drug Cocaine is heated and processed with baking soda and water, forms a substance that is smoked. Gets its name by when it’s smoked it makes a cracking sound. LASTS ONLY A FEW MINUTES WITH AN INTENSE HIGH. CLUB DRUGS USED TO STAY UP ALL NIGHT TO DANCE AT PARTIES. USER STARTS SNORTING AND THEN MOVES TO INJECTION. LASTS SEVERAL HOURS. Initially users feel confident and full of energy. • Users often binge and go days without food or sleep. • User’s behavior is often unpredictable. Once addicted, user’s find it very difficult to find pleasure in anything except using the drug. Look at page 349. CNS depressants- substances that slow down normal brain function. Called sedatives or tranquilizers. Prescribe for relief of sleeplessness, anxiety, or tension. CNS depressants produce a feeling of calm or drowsiness. Barbiturates prescribed for anxiety or tension, or for people with sleep disorders. Benzodiazepines to treat patients with more serious anxiety and panic attacks.
