Vocabulary: Unit 12
Each vocabulary unit will last for two weeks. All twenty words will be tested on a
vocabulary test at the end of the second week. For the vocabulary test, students will be
expected to understand the meaning of each word and be able to use each word in a
sentence that shows meaning.
Example:
Sentence showing meaning – Fiction books tell stories that are made up.
Sentence not showing meaning – I like fiction books.
The vocabulary words for this unit are on the back of this page. You will have two weeks to
complete your homework.
Your vocabulary folder will be collected on Friday, March 28 so I can check on your
progress. Please make sure your work is in the folder, not just the contract.
All work is due on Friday, May 2.

Topsoil is a natural product of subsoil and bedrock. Topsoil is best for plant
growth.
Is the layer of soil under the topsoil that is formed over a long period of time
by the action of water.
Bedrock is the layer of soil located underneath the subsoil layer. Bedrock is
mostly rock.
Is decayed matter in soil. It adds nutrients to the soil. It is located in the
topsoil.
Is made up of very small broken pieces of rock. Its particles are larger than
clay and smaller than sand.
Is made up of small grains of worn-down rock, has few nutrients, and does
not hold water well.
Relatively hard, naturally formed mineral or petrified matter; stone
Soil is important because many plants grow in soil, and it provides support
and nutrients for the plants. There are three layers of soil: Topsoil; Subsoil;
and Bedrock.
Nutrients are materials that plants and animals need to live and grow.
Over many years, weather, water, and living things help break down rocks
and create soil.
Contains tiny particles of soil that hold water well. Clay provides nutrients
for plants.
Is the act of protecting or taking care of resources. Without conserving soil,
plants and animals would greatly suffer, including humans.
Energy is needed to do work. We use energy from food to move, play,
breathe, think- everything our body does requires energy! The sun is the
source of almost all energy on the earth.
We get most of our energy from the sun and from other natural resources
like water, wind, and wood from trees; these are renewable resources.
Once these natural resources are used up, they are gone and cannot be
replaced. Coal, oil, and natural gas are non-renewable resources.
These include coal, oil, and natural gas. These fossil fuels come from
decayed
plants and animals and they take millions of years to form.
Shapes that are the same size and same shape.
A plane shape (two-dimensional) with straight sides. Example: triangle,
rectangle, and square
The amount of space an object occupies. Examples: cup, pints, quarts, and
