What are nonverbal communications
Intentional and unintentional
body language that convey
information that words alone
often don’t. They provide clue
to people’s inner thoughts and
feelings.
Why are they important?
■ They are the form of communication
that start before talking.
■ Allow HCP to begin formulating opinions
about patients motional state and
respond accordingly.
■ They give clues to the patients’ inner
feeli
■ They give further meaning to the spoken
message.
■ They are the main mode of
communications.

Relationship between nonverbal and
verbal communication
■ Nonverbal communication can
either enhance or interfere with
verbal communication.
■ Messages are most effective when
nonverbal and verbal
communication are consistent.
■ If there is a conflict between them
nonverbal messages are believed
more.
Types of nonverbal communications
■ Kinesics:
Body movements.
■ Proxemics:
Physical distance between people.
■ Touch
Nonverbal communications usually appear in a cluster
(group) to convey the same message.
Types of nonverbal communications
■Kinesics (Body movements)
– gestures
– facial expressions
– gaze patterns
1- Gestures
Body movements that replace or are used in
combination with words. They are the most common
and obvious form of nonverbal communications.
Uses if gestures
■ When speech is ineffective ex. language barrier
■ When speech is insufficient ex. Complex content.
■ To relieve stress ex. Running hand through hair or
nail biting.
■ Regulate flow of conversations ex. Nodding
Importance of gestures
■ Emphasize the meaning.
■ Clarify and/or add to the verbal content of a
message.
■ Hold the attention of the listener.
■ Build rapport.
Example uses of Gestures
2- Facial expressions
Facial expressions provide a rich source of information
about emotions. Many expressions are biologically
determined, universal and learned across cultures.
Importance of facial expressions
■ Help to regulate the flow of a conversation.
■ Help HCPs to understand what patients are reluctant
to talk (ex. Pain, discomfort, etc.)
■ Give feedback to the speaker to adapt
communication accordingly.
Most observable facial expressions.
■ They eyes show joy and happiness as well as sorrow,
sadness and grief.
■ Smiles convey positive feelings ex. Happiness.
■ Facial movements express happiness, interest,
surprise fear, anger, disgust or sadness.
Listeners facial expressions give feedback to the speaker.
Facial expressions include they eyes, the cheeks, the
mouth, the nose and the brows.
Can you tell which smile is fake? Why?
Leakage
Involuntary or subconscious gestures and/or facial
expressions that reveal the true feeling of an individual
Important points for HCP
■ Control your facial expressions
especially when having negative
feelings such as anger, disgust
and shock.
■ When talking with patients smile
to encourage and reinforce.
■ Pay extra attention to signs of
pain.
