By: RJ & Josh What is Leprosy? Leprosy is a infectious disease that is caused by Mycobacterium Leprae. History Leprosy has been around for as long as humans have been on Earth. The Disease originated in the countries of China Egypt, India, South Africa. Treatment Leprosy is treated with antibiotics. Such as: Dapsone Clofazimine Common Symptoms Symptoms can appear 3 to 5 years after the person becomes infected with the bacteria. Symptoms include: Muscle weakness Skin stiffness Skin rash Eye problems Enlarged nerves Severe pain Examples of Leprosy How it spreads Leprosy isn’t fully understood yet, however some theory's of how it spreads are: Person to person contact Contact with infected soil Nasal secretions and droplets Mycobacterium Leprea Modern case of leprosy A modern case of leprosy was in 1999. the carrier of the disease was a 12 year old boy named Standwa Jamal in South Africa. Who is most susceptible? Children are more prone to disease than adults. Most Common in endemic countries such as Malaysia and South Africa. Modern research NIAID has been supporting research around the world for many years. With the Mycobacterium Leprae genome now identified , researchers are looking for ways to defeat Leprosy.
