Guillaume Coppola
“Sincere, thoughtful and passionate playing” (D.Bashkirov), “sensitivity, finesse and
freshness” (Le Monde de la Musique), “a magnificent sense of musical respiration and a
consummate sense of drama” (Altamusica) : today Guillaume Coppola is recognised as one
of the most accomplished musicians of the younger generation. His CD “Franz Liszt - a
portrait” (label CALLIOPE/ Harmonia Mundi distribution) has received the praises of the
media : Diapason d’Or Découverte, FFFF Télérama, Sélection Le Monde, Coup de Coeur
Europe 1…
He can be heard in over 20 countries worldwide, not just in such prestigious European
venues as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Prague Rudolfinum, the Bratislava
Philharmonic or the Liepaja International Piano Stars Festival, but also from Shanghai
and Xiamen in Asia to South America. Not forgetting France, of course : Salle Pleyel,
Chopin Festival in Paris, Orangerie de Sceaux, Opéra Garnier, Maison de Radio France,
Folle Journée de Nantes, Ensembles in residence at la Roque d’Anthéron, the Rendez-vous
de Rochebonne… He is also a regular guest on France Musique radio shows.
Since his first notes in Besançon, a series of fortunate encounters and experiences have
helped him to develop into a genuine artist. His first decisive meeting was with France Clidat
at the age of fourteen, followed by the deeply influential Bruno Rigutto at the Conservatoire,
piano lessons with Nicholas Angelich and Hervé Billaut, chamber music with Christian Ivaldi,
then Jeff Cohen’s guidance on playing with singers, masterclasses with Leon Fleisher, Dmitri
Bashkirov and Dominique Merlet…
Claude Helffer’s monthly classes enabled him to move into contemporary music and MarieFrançoise Bucquet and Jorge Chaminé showed him the path towards professional fulfilment.
Graduating with first-class honours in piano and chamber music from the Paris
Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique has crowned his development with a
success which has been followed by many international distinctions. The International
Holland Music Sessions offered him the New Masters on Tour concert series, he was
awarded the CulturesFrance/French Government Déclic prize and First Prizes by Lion’s
Club, FLAME, Fondation de France, Fondation Cziffra, ADAMI…
Besides recitals and concertos, chamber music has made it possible for him to share
special moments with violinists Régis Pasquier, Patrice Fontanarosa or his sister Cécile
Coppola, the Debussy Quartett, Tetraktys Ensemble, and with the pianists Bruno Rigutto,
Eric Le Sage and Cédric Tiberghien as well as singers such as Marc Mauillon, Laia Falcón
or Bénédicte Tauran.
As a comprehensive and curious musician, he has taken part in productions bringing poetry
and music together, with the actor Didier Sandre for example. Collaborations with composers
have led him to play the world première of works by Steven Stucky, Sylvain Griotto and Gao
Ping, and the composer Isabel Pires has dedicated her latest work for piano, Ombres (2007),
to him.
