Year 6 Science Objectives Living things and their habitats I can explain how living things are classified into groups. I can classify living things, including plants, animals and micro-organisms according to common observable characteristics. I can give reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics. Animals including humans I can identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system. I can describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. I can describe the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way the human body functions. I can describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans. Evolution and Inheritance Light I can describe how light travels. I can explain why fossils are important and how they can provide information. I can explain how light causes us to see objects. I can investigate the shadows created by different objects. I can describe how offspring are similar and different to their parents. I can describe how living things have changed over time. I can explain identify how different animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment. I can describe the link between adaptation and evolution. Electricity I can investigate and explain how the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit affect the performance of other components. I can compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches I can draw the symbols for different components of circuits. I can draw diagrams of simple circuits using recognised symbols. I can explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.
