Unit 2: Diversity of Life — Lesson 3 Study Guide
Adaptation: Would you Survive?
Learning Targets: I can…
o define and explain “adaptation” by using an example.
o distinguish between a physical and behavioral adaptation.
Do Now: (10 minutes)
 Brainpop on Natural Selection
Vocabulary
Natural selection: those organisms with traits that are advantageous have a
greater chance of survival and passing on traits to offspring
Environmental Pressures: shortage of food, water, space, or risk of being eaten
Variation: physical or genetic differences, which can be due to genetic mutations
(changes)
Habitat: place where a plant or animal normally lives or grows
Temperature: how hot or cold something is
Climate: type of weather usually found in a part of the world
Energy: ability to move or do work
Equipped (equipment): have something that is needed
Moisture: small amount of liquid
Oxygen: gas in the air that all living things need
On the Origin of Species (Graphic Novel) by Charles Darwin
Chapter 1: Variation under Domestication
Q: How did farmers learn how to grow some of the best fruits, vegetables, or
livestock (pigs, sheep, chickens, horses, cows, etc.) around?
A: Farmers understood that they could control the features of the plants and
animals they grew (domesticated) by choosing carefully (selecting) how to breed
them.
What is Needed for Living Things to Survive?
o A right amount of_______, ______, _________, and ________.
How can science help us survive?
o Science can help us understand how to stay alive by using the
right _________to control our water, food, air, and temperature.
