Meteorology Ariel Schabes Rutgers University November 2015 My Beginnings • Started watching “Storm Stories” on The Weather Channel • Watched other weather shows on The Discovery, NatGeo, Science channels • Appreciate the incredible world that Hashem created • Major in Meteorology at Rutgers • Weather Watchers on RUTV • Interned at News 12 NJ this past summer Moriah Days Washington Trip Class of 2008 Weather is Amazing Halo/ Sundog Roll Clouds Tornado Supercell Thunderstorm Double Rainbow Superstorm Sandy/ Hurricanes What is Meteorology? • The study of the atmosphere and weather patterns • Meteorology focuses more on weather rather than climatology • Focuses more on the lower layers of the atmosphere (troposphere), where all the weather takes place • Sub-science of Atmospheric Sciences What We Use? • Computer models • Thermometer • Barometer • Weather Vane/ Anemometer What We Use? • Hygrometer (Humidity) • Rain gauges • Pyranometer • Lightning detectors How to become a Meteorologist • Study in college undergraduate, some go to graduate school, doctorate • Learn all the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) • Learn a lot of math (Calculus 1-4) What Do We Do? • Give forecasts on TV • Research weather phenomenon • Work for the government (NOAA, NHC, CPC, NWS, NCEP, NCAR, NASA) • Work for farmers • Work in businesses and trading commodities • Army (Grey Berets) • Teachers and Professors How Does Weather Affect Us? • What clothing to wear • How to prepare for different storms • Outdoor plans • Heat/air conditioning • Vacations/Flying/ Driving • Snow days!!!
