IN: What are some
things that an Earth
scientist might do?
 TERMS:
• GEOLOGY
• ECOSYSTEM
ASTRONOMY
METEOROLOGY
OCEANOGRAPHY
 OBJECTIVES:
•
List major branches of Earth science.
•
Identify branches of Earth science that are linked to
other areas of science.
•
Describe careers associated with different branches of
Earth science.
Geology – the study of the solid
Earth, or the lithosphere.
 Volcanologist – volcanoes.
 Seismologist – earthquakes.
 Paleontologist – fossils.
 Oceanography – the study of the ocean.
(The hydrosphere is the layer of water)
 Physical – waves and ocean currents.
 Biological – plants and animals.
 Chemical – natural chemicals and
pollution.
 Meteorology – the study of the
entire atmosphere, or the layer of
gas.
 One of the most common careers in
meteorology is weather forecasting.
 Hurricanes
 Tornadoes
Astronomy – the study of all
physical things beyond Earth.
 Study stars, asteroids, planets, and
everything else in space.

 Ecology – relationships between
organisms and their surroundings.
 Geochemistry – chemistry of rocks,
minerals, and soil.
 Environmental Science – how
humans interact with the
environment.
 Geography- surface features of the
Earth.
 Cartography-makes maps of those
features.
OUT: Which branch of
Earth Science would you
like to study? Why?
