TERMS: • GEOLOGY • ECOSYSTEM ASTRONOMY METEOROLOGY OCEANOGRAPHY OBJECTIVES: • List major branches of Earth science. • Identify branches of Earth science that are linked to other areas of science. • Describe careers associated with different branches of Earth science. Geology – the study of the solid Earth, or the lithosphere. Volcanologist – volcanoes. Seismologist – earthquakes. Paleontologist – fossils. Oceanography – the study of the ocean. (The hydrosphere is the layer of water) Physical – waves and ocean currents. Biological – plants and animals. Chemical – natural chemicals and pollution. Meteorology – the study of the entire atmosphere, or the layer of gas. One of the most common careers in meteorology is weather forecasting. Hurricanes Tornadoes Astronomy – the study of all physical things beyond Earth. Study stars, asteroids, planets, and everything else in space. A. B. C. Ecology – relationships between organisms and their surroundings. Geochemistry – chemistry of rocks, minerals, and soil. Environmental Science – how humans interact with the environment.
