Barry Levin, MD is a professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosciences and a Neurology attending physician at the East Orange Veterans Administration Medical Center. Along with his students and postdoctoral fellows, he utilizes selectively bred rats to study the basic neural mechanisms that predispose individuals to be obesity-prone or – resistant when fed a high fat diet. These studies include in vivo assessment of feeding, metabolic and physiological processes in rats whose brains have been altered pharmacologically or molecularly and in vitro studies including the physiological responses of single neurons to hormones and metabolites involved in regulating body weight.
