Practicum - THEA 380
Information for Theatre Majors and Minors
Department of Theatre, Speech, and Dance
The Practicum allows students to apply knowledge gained from course work, lab hours, and volunteering for Main
Stage and Second Season productions to more demanding W&M Main Stage production tasks. Faculty will mentor
each student completing these Practicums within their areas of expertise. See the list below for examples of
Practicum roles.
Theatre majors may begin to fulfill their Practicum requirements as early as their sophomore year. Students
complete a Course Contract after discussing their proposal with an appropriate faculty member. Credit may be
received in the semester concurrent with the project or in the semester following completion of the work. At least
two Practicums are required (with at least one in a technical area) for the Theatre major; at least one Practicum is
required for the Theatre minor.
Practicum opportunities provide a number of benefits to our graduates including production roles that have a high
level of responsibility, initiative, and leadership. The demonstrated versatility in at least two areas of production
help students build stronger resumes while the close contact with faculty mentors leads to potential for more in-depth
letters of recommendation. Our students are important contributors to the department’s production program.
