Romeo & Juliet is first explored in detail. The actors perform actual snippets of the major scenes of the play, speaking in Shakespeare’s iambic pentametre. These snippets are a blend of the actors legitimately performing Shakespeare’s work but also adding in their own improvisations and jokes. The part of Juliet is played by a male actor adorned in a dress and wig for example, for comedic effect. Between scenes, the actors break character to discuss the play with the audience, making sure that they’re keeping up. As the actors complete their summary of Shakespeare’s greatest love story, they realize that they probably spent too much time on just one play and opt to move a little more efficiently through the Bard’s remaining 36 works. The cast proceeds to spend one to five minutes on each of Shakespeare’s remaining plays, trying to find a unique way to make each show relatable to their audience. For example, Titus Andronicus is expressed as a cooking show, Othello as a rap battle, all of the history plays as a football game, and so on and so forth. As the actors discover that they require costumes or props to help relay the story - be it a crown, a sword, or a rubber chicken - they simply 3 retrieve the necessary items from off stage. The show is mostly scripted, but it gives the sense that the actors are making it up off the top of their heads. The show concludes with an in-depth summary of Hamlet. Similarly to Romeo & Juliet, the actors frantically play multiple roles to drive the story forward. They employ powerful soliloquies, a puppet show, a fencing match, and even some more men in drag in order to touch on the major plot points of the greatest play in the English language. EDUCAT IONAL OUT COMES The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) provides both an overview of Shakespeare’s style as well as summaries and analysis of all of his plays. The show breaks down the stylistic differences between Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies, and histories. For example, the actors relay the political landscape of Elizabethan England that lead to the histories being written in the first place and debate why many of the comedies have similar plot devices and themes. Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet are particularly delved into by the actors; however, they not only perform a summary of the plays but also draw focus to Shakespeare’s reoccurring motifs. The cast highlight their use of: mistaken identity, cross-gender casting, play-within-a-play, stage combat, direct address, etc. Furthermore, they comment that these motifs arise in Shakespeare’s work as a byproduct of the Elizabethan society in which the Bard was living in at the time. At the same time that this show is about Shakespeare’s work, it’s also geared towards an audience that may not be familiar with much or any of his 37 plays. It’s kept light as the three actors use their real names and build the premise that they are unsure if they’ll be able to perform all of Shakespeare’s scripts in the allotted time – but that, if they cooperate and get some help from the audience, they’ll be able to accomplish their task. The show is made relatable through the actors directly addressing and improvising moments with each new audience. Furthermore, Shakespeare’s characters are compared to present-day celebrities, and modern pop music underscores the show. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is educational at its core, but is fun to watch and fun to be a part of, thus keeping the audience engaged and wanting more. 4 T HE CAST BROOKLYN RIT CHIE (DIRECTOR) A freelance theatre artist who splits his time between Edmonton and Calgary.
