Behind The Treatment: DermaSweep
I recently had the opportunity to try out DermaSweep, a unique, non-invasive beauty treatment that not only
exfoliates the skin, but also gets collagen moving again. As a woman in my early 30s, I'm always looking for
ways that I can improve my skin texture, erase fine lines and help curb any breakouts. With this procedure, I
know I've found it. The treatment was incredibly comfortable and I left with a rosy complexion and after a week,
my skin looked clearer than it's looked in years. We caught up with Kayla Mannausa, Licensed Medical
Aesthetician at Pinski Dermatology (who performed my treatment) to talk even more about DermaSweep - why
it's fantastic for the skin, the misconceptions, and why it's all the rage in Hollywood. A
look at Pinski Dermatology in downtown Chicago and Kayla Mannausa, Licensed Medical Aesthetician
FACTIO MAGAZINE: Tell us about DermaSweep. How is it a unique treatment?
KAYLA MANNAUSA:
DermaSweep™ MD Multi-Level Skin Resurfacing System exfoliates dead skin and damaged cells with a
unique bristle technology, and gently “sweeps” away signs of aging. A controlled vacuum stimulates blood flow
and accelerates collagen production. The second portion of the treatment uses highly concentrated, parabenfree epidermal infusions that provide the skin with essential vitamins and ingredients that improve the overall
health of the skin. Some of the infusions include: Acne, Vitamin C, Hyperpigmentation, Hydration, Calming,
Balancing, and Exfo (combination of salicylic and glycolic acid). One of the latest infusions is a Trichloracetic
Acid (TCA) Peelfusion™ which improves fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and breakouts. This power
packed duo exfoliation treatment is an excellent boost to the traditional DermaSweep.
FM: How is it different from Microdermabrasion?
KM: DermaSweep is the new-age microdermabrasion and
the advanced technique allows for a more precise, controllable treatment. In addition, it exfoliates deeper in a
less abrasive manner and fully removes the entire stratum corneum, which is the damaged outer layer of the
epidermis that gives skin that “crepey” appearance. Once removed, the infusions are able to penetrate deeper.
This duo process provides the skin with powerful facial rejuvenation for a youthful, healthy glow.
FM: What are some of the benefits of DermaSweep?
KM: Three main benefits - exfoliation, collagen
stimulation, and revitalization of skin tone and texture. Also, this non-invasive treatment has no downtime! When
the treatment is performed on a regular basis (2-4 weeks is recommended), it helps to slow down the overall
aging process and is great before any event! The new Peelfusion™ is unique in the fact that the skin is microresurfaced before the 15% TCA is infused. Skin is left refreshed and only includes a few days of minor dryness
and flaking- but most experience a no-downtime type of peel.
FM:Who is the right candidate for this treatment?
KM: Everyone! The DermaSweep is a great option for all
skin types and skin colors. The DermaSweep treats a variety of skin conditions and overall skin care goals due
to the wide variety of infusions and setting control. The bristle tips range from delicate to abrasive with
adjustable vacuum pressure to truly customize the treatment for every individual. A consultation at the time of a
patient’s first treatment allows me to assess the patient’s skin, understand their treatment goals and make sure
the patient has no contraindications to the treatment. FM: Is it painful?
KM: The treatment is very
comfortable and relaxing. The “dry sweep" feels like a mini-vacuum going over the skin, followed by a cooling
sensation of an Epi-infusion or Peelfusion. If the patient is doing the 15% TCA, some minor tingling, itching or a
slight stinging sensation might be experienced. This goes away very quickly as the peel begins to self-neutralize
very rapidly and a handheld fan may be used to alleviate any discomfort. A Vitamin A treatment is applied to the
skin post-peel and will help to accelerate cell turnover and enhance the patient’s results. The final step is the
application of a soothing barrier repair and sunblock. FM: How will skin look after?
KM: Post-treatment
skin feels fresh, toned and radiant. Patient’s leave with an immediate glow and are able to return immediately to
work. If a Peelfusion was used, some patients may feel “tighter” and then will begin to experience some dryness
and minor flaking the next couple days. FM: What are some of the best results we can hope for after a
series of treatments. How many treatments would you suggest?
KM: For the traditional DermaSweep with
an Epi-infusion we recommend a series of six to eight spaced ten days to two weeks apart. For a
DermaSweep/TCA treatment we recommend a series of four spaced one to two weeks apart, followed by
maintenance treatments. After a series, results can be dramatic. Texture will continue to improve, skin tone
appears brighter and the face looks rejuvenated. Patients also experience drastic breakout reduction,
improvement in brown spots and overall luminosity of their skin. Also, DermaSweep is excellent on the neck,
décolleté and a luxurious hand treatment!
FM: How long will our polished skin last after the treatment?
KM: Results after one treatment are
immediate as skin will look and feel soft and healthy. However, for more dramatic results, a series of treatments
is recommended followed by a good maintenance regimen. FM: What are some common misconceptions
of DermaSweep?
KM: Most patients will ask about downtime with this treatment, as they have experienced
irritation with other procedures. Once they experience what a relaxing, non-invasive treatment DermaSweep is
and the results they see with it, patients are quickly back in for another series! FM: Any celebrities that you
know of that are fans of the treatment?
KM: DermaSweep is huge in Beverly Hills and Orange County and is
a celebrity best-kept secret. It is great before any event and is a celeb favorite on the day of the Oscars and
Grammy’s. Most need less makeup because the skin looks naturally dewy. FM: What is a great infusion
option before any event? KM: The Vitamin C is our favorite! Pinski Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery is
